I posted a thread earlier and got some good feedback on "what bulbs for me...".
Please correct me if I am wrong..but the impression that I got was the sylvania superwhites were the way to go without torching my harness OR I could go about upgrading my harness and getting some higher output bulbs. Now for the part that puzzles me....
I was doing some trolling on ebay and most of the bulbs for sale there advertise higher wattage and light with no risk of damage to the harness (like the ones on the link here) Dead Link Removed

Am I wrong in assuming that you DO risk damaging your harness if you go above stock wattage?
what gives..or is there a basic rule of thumb I can follow so not to get "burned"?
thanks

Any bulbs that use more power (watts) than the stock bulbs risk melting or damaging the wiring. I cannot remember off hand what the stock rating is.

Now bulbs that produce as much light as another bulb that uses more watts, but without needing the extra power to do so are okay.

I agree with John... any time you use something that is a higher wattage then what it is designed for (unless its like 10 watts, something trivial) you risk frying the wiring harness, connectors, etc. Ford doesn't over componsate on anything and there wiring connectors are no different, they are designed ot handle an exact wattage amount and any more will heat up the wires/connectors more then they are designed for.

I agree with John & Matt. Additionaly, when you use higher wattage bulbs without a high power harness you dont get enough volts to the bulbs and they are not as bright as they should be. The stock wiring creates resistance going to the high watt bulbs and heats up. It will fail at the weakest point. Sometimes the bulb socket or the stalk bright/dim switch.
