NP242-is it possible...

Does anybody know how hard it would be to install an NP242 transfer case into an Explorer? I know there are many threads about various BW cases but I was curious about the NP series.

Anything is possible. The first problem is they have different bolt patterns, so an adapter plate will be required. The second problem is they have different spline counts for the input shaft, so either a spud shaft or a custom input would have to be manufactured for the t-case or a custom output shaft for the tranny. After it's all said and done, it would be easier, and probably cheaper to just drop in an Atlas.

I dont know what your transmission looks like but another solution is to fab up another tailshaft housing with the proper pattern. Of course you still have to take care of the splines - which are probably different.

Cool. Thanks for the quick and informative reply. I was talking to a Jeep owner earlier and got to thinking about my old Cherokee with that t-case. I remembered an article I read in JP Magazine years ago praising it and got to thinking "hmmm, what if?"

When it comes down to it, all I really want is to is eventually rid myself of this auto 4x4 properly. BWM for now.
