Numerous Problems with my '98 X

Shop called today.. they need to replace two oxygen sensors.. another $300 + tax. We're close to the book value of the truck in repairs. All of this just to comply with a stupid law!!!!

Paid the $300 and drove it home today. So far, so good.

Now I need an alternator since that died on me in October. So I went to Levine's... bought a rebuilt for $201.14.
Inquired about the wheel bearing I need, too.. that will be another $195+ tax for a decent one. I can't believe how much this stuff costs nowadays.. the last time I replaced an alternator, a rebuilt was $37!

I replaced my alternator yesterday. What a difference compared to doing the same work on my 82 Dodge pickup! The belt tensioner is a great invention. I had the belts on and off in 10 seconds. Changing out the alternator was easy. Fetching all the tools was the hardest part of it all. New alternator works great. The performance test data sheet says 134 amps at 6000rpm. That's pretty beefy. I remember the generator on my '59 VW was 30 amps and the alternator on my '68 Caddy was something like 65 amps. My Dodge pickup has a 'beefed up' 100 amp alternator to run the optional electric lift for the plow. The Explorer has what appears to be a very ample alternator, even though there's no big demand stuff on the truck to speak of.

When are you going back in for the emissions testing?
