O/D dash light flashing/clunk when come to stop

My 1995 4WD Explorer with 103,000 miles has three symptoms that appeared around the same time. My mechanic says they are coincidental and unrelated. What do you think? Is there a known problem/solution?

1) The O/D light on the lower right corner of the instrument panel flashes. Pressing the O/D button on the stalk has no effect.

2) When the car is coming to a stop, there's a "clunk" in the drivetrain

3) When the car is coming to a stop, the brake pedal feels "mushy"

I actually experienced the same thing yesterday morning... just before my transmission totally quit on me and left me stranded on my way to work. I had to tow it back to a local shop and the diagnosis is a replacement tranny.

Hope you make out better than I did...

P.S. initial diagnosis with the scan tool only said the tranny is getting hot somehow and needs to be made cooler when running. Less than an hour later having it in drive was the same as neutral

Quit driving it and get it scanned for codes. Any mechanic that tells you to continue driving and to ignore the flashing light is a idiot.

I was under the impression that the blinking o/d light was related to the onboard diagnostics and that it was ok for the light to blink as it goes through the diag process, but if the light stays on then get it checked or scanned for codes... much the way the check engine light works.

my explorer did this the other day. I talked to my mechanic friend and he said to try and take the battery cable off for the night and put it on before i go to work. I did and the flashing light hasnt returned. But i am still scared! Im am going to get the tranny fluid flushed next week. And hope i dodged a bullet.
