When does the O/D light start to flash, as soon as you start it up (cold engine), or after you've been driving a while? My '97 Explorer was doing somewhat of the same thing. It drives fine until it warms up after a long trip, maybe 40 - 50 miles and then the O/D light starts to flash and the shifts get really hard. I also have a clunk that sounds like the torque converter isn't locking up. Took it to my local tranny shop and they said that the torque converter was in the very early stages of going bad and I needed a tranny rebuild. I'm gonna try to replace the solenoids on the valve body and see what that does. Take a look here for more valve body info:

A long thread, but a TON of useful info!!

Good Luck, and welcome,
Brad

the o/d light, like seconds after the truck starts

man the o/d light comes on as soon as the truck starts. not even 3 seconds after ignition is turned.

The flashing O/D light is just like a flashing check engine light, I'd try to get AAMCO to give you the codes that they found and do some more looking around on here.
