Hello everyone.........want to say thanks first and foremost, since all of you have helped me sava a buck or 2 in the past........this site is great!!

Anyway, just wanted to throw my latest explorer problem at y'all to see what you think.

Recently at highway speeds my tranny wont kick into O/D. When driving around 55-60, if i let off the gas and then apply gas again, the transmisson does not engage and the rpm's rev. after breaking and slowing down it will enage again. When I put the truck in D (no O/D), I dont notice the reving at highway speeds and the truck drives OK (at least thats what I am trying to tell myself).

The truck drives OK around the town, no slipping and pretty good aceleration (at least for an Explorer).

I remember hearing a loud bang from the rear one time a little while ago when giving the truck gas while on the highway. I am guessing that bang was my OD gear getting destroyed.

My truck is a 1992, 150k miles, already had a tranny rebuild 2 years ago, had my tranny fluid changed at juffy lube about 3 months ago (not just from the basepan).

So I am pretty much asking if my O/D is indeed shot, and if I can still drive the car around town, and limited highway usage.

thanks all for your help!!!!

Best Regards,

Jakerot

hmmmm

My old 91 Explorer would do something similiar but from first to second and third to fourth. It could be a servo is is a rubber part inside the transmission. I was told i needed an entire new tranny but a local transmission shop knew what it was and saved me about a thousand bucks. It is a fix a shop can do for about $200 Might be the problem. But i duno. Leme know how ya make out

With a no OD problem, I like to recommend that you start by determining if it's external to the transmission or internal to the transmission. A broken wire in the OD solenoid circuit would cause a no OD condition that would be cheap and easy to fix. Bad data from a TPS or VSS would cause the computer to not shift the transmission into OD. I would make sure the computer control portion of the OD is working before blaming it on something internal to the transmission.

outrun84......OK thanks for the reply, i will have it checked out

Mr Shorty......thank you also for your reply......I have though about my problem bieng external to the transmission, however I have ruled this out due to 2 factors (1) the fact that before this started happening, i was driving at highway speeds and heard a very loud "bang" come from under my truck while applying the gas and (2) the fact that when the transmission is in O/D mode, the rpm's rev high when at highway speeds, as if the truck was in neutural. I confirmed it again, that when the truck is NOT in O/D mode, there is no slipping or reving. Yesterday while driving at 60mph with the O.D off, i put the transmission in O/D on and when I applied the gas the rpm's raced to 5k or so before i let off the gas. the transmission was not engaged at all. this leads me to belive that the loud bang i heard was my O/D gear(s) getting stripped.

Oh well.........

thanks again
