Well, its happened. O/D Off is blinking. Seems to shift alrite. But there is a bad clunk when I come to a stop. Checked the fluid and its way over full. Which its never been before and it has bubbles on the dipstick. Whats happened. I drove it home from work which is only 6 miles and it seemed alrite except the clunk. Temp never went above 125*.

My transmission clunks too when i'm slowing down. I know it's the OD because when i turn it off, the tranny doesn't clunk. It's been that way ever since it's been rebuilt at 115,000 now at 134,000 or so...

Ok, worked on it a little bit. Let it cool down while I ate supper. Went to check for codes using the jumper method, the on jumper fell off which clears the codes. So the O/D Off light has stopped. I figured I'd take it out for a short drive, what do ya know? It won't come back. I come to a stop and no clunk. What in the world is going on? I'm still gonna take it to the tranny shop and see what they have to say.

This still doesn't explain why the level has come up. The cooler and external filter are still letting fluid through. The temp gauge will move and the cooler and filter is hot. I don't know if a should let some fluid out or not.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. It sounds like the shift solenoid or sensor went bad. Happened in my wifes van. There wasn't any bubbling but you couldn't turn the OD off. Oh and the light flashed when you tried to switch it.

I know mine has problems at high RPMs when it shifts from second to third. My OD acted the same way. It was kinda "wobbly" coming out though.

Funny thing is, the tranny is acting up in both of our Explorer's. The '02s is at the dealer getting rebuilt now.

Ok, finally matched up the codes I got. Well, only got one. 33:

33 ALL - (O, M) EGR did not open/ respond during test or if memory code, did not open intermittently - EVP EVR PFE

Normal, or should I be worried. Never threw a CEL though. Obviously not related to the tranny though.

Ok, I really feel like I'm talking to myself here :(. But o well. Took it for a drive this morning with nothing. Shifted fine, no clunk. Brought it back. Did the scan again. I'm tihnking its a 111 code which means everything is just peachie!! So I'm just going to drain the extra fluid and hopefully it will be ok.

On a side note I just discovered the back of my 1 year old muffler is rotted away

when the o/d light flashes (depending on the code) it puts the transmission in a safe mode when it does that the transmission will shift harder. The bubbles are a bad sign, it means your fluid is cavitating which will raise the trans fluid temp.

If your trannie was properly filled to start, it doesn't MAKE more fluid (g). An apparent overfilled condition in that case either means air in the fluid or maybe something else... like coolant. What do your "bubbles" look like? Rather than drain it out... wait til morning and see if it still shows overfull running in park after say 10 minutes.

Your "bubbles" have me worried.

It IS worth noting, that once the shifting became controlled by the computer, which it did on the 4R series and later.... a bad sensor input from the engine could make it appear there was a transmission problem, when in fact the trannie was mechanically and electrically fine, it ws just getting bad input from a confused computer. A bad TPS has been known to cause problems for example. Your problem though, sounds different.

Thats the thing though. The temp never went over 125*. Right now I think I've found a cure though. Looking at an '00 with a V8. So we'll see how that goes.

I had horrible tanny problems with my 1996, I feel you pain. I had an easy cheap fix the one time. It was a different code, "incorrect gear ratio/ something else. That turned out to be a bad solenoid. After 3 rebuilds I finally found a reliable cure. The v8 Mounty :) I currently have. I hope your problem is something that can easily be patched up. If you decide you want to trade it off it' always nice to not have to sneak something by the salesman. I traded in my last Ex with a bad tranny, and t case, and they called me on both. I had limped it to 3 different lots, looking at only V8's(looked at at least 30) and I didn't think it would make it to another lot.

I haven't looked around much. I had fallen in love with this one a long time ago. Looked at it in depth and decided it was too much. With the tranny scare we wanted to try and get rid of mine. So our of curiosity we went down and looked again.

While they're looking at the oil leak my dad's not gonna let me drive mine for fear of the tranny taking a crap. Which makes sense. But I still want to drive mine around for old times sake. :)
