1995 Explorer XLT
Hi everyone,
I have a 95 XLT, 4.0 and the check engine light comes on after a bit.So i went to the local auto parts store and hooked their OBD tester under the dash(there's 1 under the hood too) to read the codes and got an error message that the tester couldn't connect to vehicle or some such message.I read that this may be a problem with the PCM, so i went to a local wrecking yard and bought a couple computers and tried them.Same thing occurred!I thought of buying one of those perfomance modules off Ebay for $275 but dont know if that would help solve the problem?

Any help in this area would be greatly appreciated!

Please send responses to my email cuz i have a hard time navigating this forum stuff

Thanks
BillyRay

check the cig lighter fuse. on my 2000 this same circuit provides the power for the OBD port.

Most of the 1995's required using a jumper wire under the hood and counting the flashes of the check engine light. The OBD 2 port underneath the steering column just won't connect to an OBD 2 Reader. Or should it?

Or is Mrbeliever just phishing?

The OBD reader under the hood is a dummy plug, there are no wires going to it. Need to use the under-hood.

Just do this:

Its not a dummy plug. You can read body related codes (GEM, ABS, ETC.) from the OBDII plug, just not ECM codes.

True- for ECM it's a dummy plug...

just phishing? Why be rude?

A little bit about me: My name is BillyRay, i am 51 years old and i own 2 computer repair shops in Spokane Wa.
Prior to that i owned my own auto repair shop and have been around automotive/diesel shops most of my life so im no dummy when it comes to auto repair.

I came to this site to try and get some positive feedback about my Explorer. If you cant be nice then go play somewhere else and leave me alone.

Now back to the issue at hand, why do i need to use a paper clip and jump the connector when i can use a fancy code reader? I have tried 3 different tools(3 different auto stores), at both diagnostic points with the same results, so i pretty much can eliminate the OBD 2 tools as the problem(could all 3 tools be bad?).

About my lighter, yes that was the first thing i checked(as suggested by the people at Auto Zone) and since i can charge my phone on one and Bluetooth on the other id say they both are working(there are 2 lighters for those who dont know).

I was told the 1995 Explorer is a transitional year thus 2 diagnostic points before eliminating the access point under the hood in the later model. The plug under the hood is NOT a dummy being fully wired. The other access point is just under the steering column. It seems the OBD reader cannot connect with the computer to read the "stored" codes

I thought just maybe someone on here has had the same problem with their 95/96 and could give me some direction rather than taking her in to the shop @ $$$ per hour.

Thanx for ur input!
psss...the only fishing i am doing is for answers.

The EEC-IV connector under the hood will only give you engine codes.

The OBDII connector under the dash will only give you body codes... NO ECM codes.

This is only for the '95... '96+ everything comes through the OBDII port.

Let me apologize, its not easy to make yourself out to be the victim, I understand it can be very confusing and frustrating trying to navigate and search this forum stuff. It seems for a person, in your profession, who owns 2 Computer Repair shops that this task would be simpler. I see that you were able to find your way back to this thread and post pics. Way 2 Go! If you will notice, along with my question of your intentions, the useful information. Now we have "another" thread on this subject, awesome.

Just like when a person is called an a-hole for recommending that you search, instead of having someone just give you the answer you're looking for. <---That to me "seems" rude. Then again, difference of opinions.

***medicating***:smoke:

Sorry for that a-holes outburst, he gets really *****y "if he forgets his meds".

btw, Nice rig and Welcome to the site. What do you have planned for the front end? Oem parts or Fifth Gen. Grill swap

This site is overflowing with information, just reorganizing the search words changes the results. I know how it feels about the searching. I am working on my Aunt Pam's 1995 OBD I at the moment and am having a fun time going through pages of threads to find information about the "transmission solenoids resistance specs" and the good internal wiring harness pics for the 4r55e. The information is here, I just have to find it. Many many great men have taken many many long hours to post many many great pics and include many many detailed explanations of their findings.

And then my post like this helps absolutely no one. l8r

What pics do you need? I currently have the pan off a 95 4r55e and can take an pic you need.

Wow, what a small world. I wonder how many 4r55e are getting fixed at this moment in the world. Thanks for the offer, I just like to look a schematic of the harness and 16 pin plug for the ohms test of the different solenoids at the plug. and download complete. I probably over analyze the differences between the 4r and the 5r. I think i am getting ahead of myself thou as the line pressure test looks ok. Going to search again about the EPC port pressure test and how its performed and what I should be looking for. I'm Not a hijacker. Lurker Yes! please

Going to take a bath in trans fluid again, 5th time the pan has been down. Add a drain plug already.

This one isnt getting fixed. I stole the deep 4x4 pan off it to replace the shallow 2wd pan on my 5r55e.

Just do this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8lkba9CWI6M

Thanx Joe Dirt and others.I did as the video shows and retrieved my codes.
326(R,M)Pressure Feedback EGR shows low pressure EGR not seating or not seating intermittantly - PFE
332(R,M)EGR did not open/respond during test or if memory code, did not open intermittantly - EVR or PFE.
335(O)EGR feedback signal is/was out of range - EVR or PFE

So I replaced the EGR valve.
I also got this code too,

631(O)Overdrive Cancel Light circuit problem

Is there supposed to be a light in the cluster that tells when OD is on?

This one i need direction with(631)

...and i really dont know how to properly use the OD, it seems to work by itself? Any tips?

and i havent drove her yet to get new set of codes. Will keep ya posted

There is no overdrive ON light, There is an OD OFF light in the cluster. Pull the cluster and replace the bulb. (actually, check it first, hopefully its just a bad bulb.)

Thanx snoranger, will check the bulbs cuz i dont see any OD light(on or off). The OD does work.

A follow up on my codes:I still get the same codes(providing i cleared them properly). So i will replace the PFE and EVR then check again.

It is still throwing the check engine light

Sounds like a bad DPFE sensor.

If you do replace the DPFE, don't get the Duralast DPFT from Autozone. Spend a few extra and get a Motorcraft DPFE from Rockauto.com as the parts store DPFE's seem to last very short periods of time.

Sure they're warranted, but it's a pain in the a$$ to pull and return them 2-3 times before you get a decent one that makes it a year.
