odd fuel gauge question, 91X, intermitant operation?

Alright, so since ive had this x ive known that the fuel gauge has been inop
im prettu sure that the problem is with the sending unit, but have lacked the ambition to drop the tank or the desire to spend the coin to replace the unit.
ive been doing well with the whole, its been x amount of miles, maby i should get gass method.

well tonight i come out of pep boys, hop in the truck, and notice my fuel gauge reads 1/4 tank... no clue if thats right, but why would it all of a sudden be working?

is there a posibility that its only reading from a certain point and below, and i havent let it run that empty?

figured id throw this to the think tank for some ideas

well i also had a no working gauge when i got my x. i tought the same thing that it was the sending unit. so when i had to change my fuel pump i figured i would get the whole unit. but it was my luck that this didnt fix the problem. it ended up being the a board in the back of the gauge cluster was the prob. all i did was went to the local u pull it and pulled one out the back of another cluster and it worked. but you have to watch out there are numbers on the board. each one will read different. i couldnt find the exact one so i got a couple and just switched them out till i was close.
