Guys,
I am still looking for an X. I have another question though. On the pre-2002 Explorers (the ones with the non-digital odometers) what is to keep someone from disconnecting the speedometer cable and frauding the mileage? I am told that with the new digital odometers that the truck won't shift if it is an automatic and the computer doesn't see the input. Any truth to this? The reason I am asking is because I recently looked at a 2001 Eddie Bauer that allegedly had 8,000 miles on it. The truck was pretty clean, but I was skeptical about it and stayed away.

Thanks,
Todd

There is no way to tell if a odo has been disconected. All you could do to help guess the mileage is to look over the service records and smog checks. Also look for wear like tires, seats, tranny fluid, belts, etc.

From what I understood, the odometer is registered to a computer nomatterwhat the mechanical odometer say. I'm not 100% sure on this but check.

I heard somewhere

that starting in 97 computer stored the mileage. Before 95 you could remove the mechanical cable and the tranny and speed control would still work. 95 and later the speedometer was electronic, driven from the VSS

Guys,
Thanks for the info. So, how do you pull the mileage from the computer and see if it matches up with the mechanical odometer?
Thanks again,
Todd

Unless someone has different info there is no memory in the EEC system to store mileage. I have never pulled mileage or seen that option using a SBDS or NGS scan tools.
