any one doing any off road soon.
i was thinking with the 2 to 3 inches of rin last weekend it would be ideal time.
I have not been able to do anything since modifying my truck because i haven't been able to get anyone to go with me and any clubs up here will not let me because i am only 2 wheel drive!!! I am afraid to do anything except some fire roads without someone with me in another truck.
my luck i would get stuck quick. I highly doubt it but you know..

David

We have always offered for you to come on our runs and meets. If you give us a month notice and wanna do a weekend thing, I bet we could get somthing going. I know of 2 trails up here in vt that would be perfect and you probably would not get stuck. It all depends if Ike has some funds to play around with. I've been trying to get him to come up here again.

you always seem to go far. I am talking about someone near me..

it is 4 to 5 hours from me to you.. that is a little far to go play on some trails.lol

David during our past runs I know your work schedule prohibited you from getting away for unless it was on a Sunday Afternoon... What is your schedule like now and what trails are available in your area?

BTW I'm always ready to report for a decent VT NH road trip :salute:

My rig is in the shop getting an engine put in. I should be getting it back in a couple days. Then at some point next week I am installing my body lift. After that I would love to do some light wheeling. I want to take it easy on the used engine the first couple of times out. So yeah, Id love to hook up. I know some decent trails in north east ct. not to far from you.
Ill keep you posted when my truck is back together.

Would I be able to take my Explorer on those trails and not cause damage to my truck?

I was up there 9 days and you didn't suggest going on the trails? Shame on you :dunno:

I highly suggest that you bring extra money for repairs if you plan to take it on the trails. It wll probably make it through, but the mud might get you stuck. My rig will not be hitting any trails at all.

John,

Let me know what you wanna do. You can pick up ike and come up north and hit those trails we found. With a little more searching I bet there is more. Maybe we will see another hermit.

Sandy it is best to assume any trail has the potential for causing damage  and creating a costly repair. Even if Matt indicates the trail is easy you could blow your transmission just as if you were driving on the street. Extracting such a vehicle could be costly. Trails change all the time; new tree growth or fallen trees with low hanging branches (waiting to scratch paint), mud holes and washouts created by rain storms. As such before you go off-road you need to know what your acceptable level of damage is. IMO no one should go off-road 5+hrs from home unless they have $$ for parts and repairs. Busting a transmission near home is an inconvenience :( (tow it home and bum rides until you have the $$ to fix). Busting a transmission several states away can be a horror show  without $$ to fix it.. Where do you stay, how will you get home, where do you leave the X (storage fees?).

Ok so Sunday and Monday mornings work for you... What trails are in your area?

I would so love to join this little excursion but my X is still laid up. I'm getting antsy to drive it let alone kick in the 4x4. Keep me updated if something comes about.
signed,
still X-less in CT

Point taken, John I think I won't take my truck on any trails until I either:

1.) Have sufficient money for repairs if something goes wrong or
2.) Get money together to find another truck to use as a trail rig.

Not planning anything like the above until I move next summer though.

For now I'll just ride with one of you if you don't mind :D

John,

Your more then welcome to come up to VT for off roading! I know you wanna hit the new trail we found! muhh hahahah. The weather has been great up here 50s and 60s. If we go, I might be able to get my dads 4 wheeler.

Like I said If you want to hook up with me and my friends once my x is up and running your more than welcome to come along. We are not to far from you and there are a plenty of trucks to pull you out if you get stuck. If you like food, beer and mud give me a pm and we will set something up

What the hell is it with the weather? Snowed once while I was up in VT, enough to have to clean off my X. Today it was near 60 here in CT.......where the hell is the snow!!!!!!!!!!

Just checked the Weather Channel. 5 minutes to midnight and it's 56 degrees in Middletown, CT, 58 degrees in Brockton, MA, and 55 degrees in Essex Junction, VT.......with 60 plus temps for most of New England tomorrow......this is NOT winter :(

Think most of the snow we are supposed to get was dumped in Colorado and other states nearby

This pic was taken while we were heading back from our vacation in VT, my daughter took this with my cell phone, it was taken at a rest stop, near Randolph, VT

My $.02

1.) David, we still want to meet you and see what you and your 2by can do. Personally, I love keeping my rig in 2wd as much as possible over the trails. It's unfortunate (to beat a dead horse here) that the scheduling conflicts with yours, but we still try our best to accommodate as many people as possible. If you've noticed, a few of us live around southeast MA and know pretty much zero trails around. If you know any, please share. And do keep your eyes peeled for new ones.

2.) Sandy, as you've noticed, John has a very valid point. I remember on the first trip into the trails in Brookline, NH, Jon (outrun84, remember him?) busted his transmission climbing up a rock or something. Luckily he was headed back up to VT and was able to limp there in 2nd gear the entire way. Then there was my own incident in VT 2 years ago when my wheel bearing blew up. I had to catch a ride with Tim back home and ask big big favors to go and fetch my truck $700 in repairs later. (And that was at $55/hour at a Ford dealer!) When we have more than just Matt up there, who will only wheel his daddy's quad :bsnicker: you're more than welcome to drive with us. What we found was nothing overly complicated, but without extra eyes and hands, and with scarce daylight up in the woods, you don't want to be out there unless you know exactly what to do. All it can take is one flat tire (or worn bearing! ) and you can be majorly boned unless you're prepared.

I remember him, haven't heard anything about him lately, his profile shows that he signed into the site last, in Sept 2006

Yeah, Ike I do remember that incident, seeing the pics of your rig on a flatbed made me feel really bad for you, and as I was dealing with all the problems with my 92 at that time I couldn't even attend that run, I do vividly however, remember the 2003 Brookline trip that ended really fast for me when I lost the back wheel of my truck outside of Sturbridge MA, $680 in repairs for that bit

I think I'll wait until I move next summer and then when I'm settled start saving money for an inexpensive Explorer to use for a trail rig, if I screw something up on that, I can afford to wait until I have the money to repair it, I don't want to do the same to my daily driver which has gone to Vermont and back twice, and to the Cape once, even though I couldn't stay due to overdrafting my bank account. :o

When I went up to Vermont with my brother and my youngest girl for the Christmas/New Years holidays, I played it smart this time, I left enough money to cover the bill for the hotel, and withdrew the rest, that way I knew exactly where I stood with funds, I came home with enough money to buy my breakfast before work, and had two checks waiting, which most of it was used for rent, insurance on my truck ($161.67 monthly, but it covers everything, like fire, theft, etc.), property taxes on my truck and food of course

Hahaha wheel my Dads quad, your funny. I could probably get his 4 Wheeler. Plus you still owe me a trip where I get to drive your explorer. Cause you drove mine.

When I (finally!) get it on the beach, you're more than welcome to take a whack at it. I'd let you try a nice rocky incline, but you didn't let me play with either the lights or the siren. ;)
