02 mountaineer v8 awd
hi all i have a 2002 mountaineer 4.6 v8 and just did my first oil change and botched it up. I hand tightened the filter and ran the engine about 10 seconds when I saw a puddle gushing from the from the front, I didn't tighten it enough. now i don't know how much oil to replace!! how can i do it? or should i just drain it all and star tall over? also how do i dry the belts and hose that got full of oil? help!!!!!

start over.

cat litter etc will help with oil

dawn works well to clean oil off stuff.

i'm not worried about cleaning up i'm worried about damage to the belts, slippage, or corrosion

just use dawn to clean it off, dawn with water, is an oil eater, should clean up.

oil is a protector vs corrosion, what it does do, is deform rubber over time with heat.

in any case, should be no harm, clean it up wipe it off, and you should be fine.

Make sure the first oil filter gasket isn't still on the oul bung before you put the next filter on also... Sometimes they like to come off, leave you with 2 gaskets, and create a heck of a mess...

welcome frank

thanks to all

yep!!! this has been an expensive lesson!!! the old gasket was still in, so every time I filled it, when pressure bult - out it came, I love the car and my wife uses it to go to work night shifts (3 - 4 am ) too dark to see the oil streak but some pointed out the puddle when she was leaving. The stick was dry so she stuck in a quart (she always carries a spare- bless her heart) and when to the garage 2 blocks away. They raged on to her telling her that why you need "professionals like us" and proceed to put in 4 qts of 10w30!!!! telling her "that's what we put in all our cars" she knew better but held her tongue. Got home and called me but at least now it's not leaking. should we drain it and put the 6 quarts of 5w20 or add 5w20 the engine feels a little heavy.

The thinner oil will be better for mileage, I used to run that grade in all of my Cars and trucks until Ford dropped the spec to 5W-20 for economy.

Glad you got it figured out!

As for the "Experts" those are the same type of "Experts" that two-threaded an oil pan bolt in my neighbor's car, which he figured out after it dropped the plug, dumped the oil, and seized on the highway. Once you know how to do something yourself, there is no better expert than yourself, because you'll not find an outside party that will care about your car more than you do. :)

At this point, if it was my truck and there were foreign hands on it, I'd probably just drop the plug, replace the oil and filter, and know for sure what's in there and start your interval over. A self change with Motorcraft Semi-syn 5W20 and a Motorcraft filter won't cost you more than $10-$12 in materials anyway.

Not if you buy the Oil from Autozone. I was at one Sat and they wanted $3.99 a qt for 5w30 and $4.29 a qt for 10w30 for Motorcraft synthetic blend
:eek::eek::eek:

The "experts" ended up paying $900 for Dodge to replace the oil pan on our first Cummins/Ram. At least they stepped up and payed for the damage they caused.

I just bought 5 quarts of 5w-20 for $2.89 each at Wally World about 3 weeks ago... :)
