When installing an oil cooler with a sandwich adapter, do you have to drain the oil from the system first? The instructions don't say to do that, just to remove the filter. Is this implied, and I'm just an idiot?

Shouldnt have to...

You shouldnt have to drain the oil. When you pull the filter off ther will be a small amount left in the passage that will drip out, but nothing to worry about. I change my filter without draining the oil frequently and I have never had any problems. Just remember to check the oil level after putting the new filter on.
I prefill my filter and its usually down maybe a 1/4 qt, but since you will have the volume in the lines and the cooler who knows.

What cooler are you using - where did you mount it?

Good Luck

Thanks for the quick reply.

I'm using a Perma-Cool oil cooler. It comes witha sandwich adapter to make things easier. They also have one with a filter relocation adapter. I mounted it just in front of the radiator on the passenger side. It actually hangs a bit below the radiator. I'm also installing a tranny cooler, so I have to keep room fo that. Tha tranny cooler will be on the drivers side, but mounted diagonally, sloping downa s it goes back. The top will be at the bumper opening to get good air flow.
