I've been looking into installing a tranny cooler and I haven't been able to find a post addressing this specific issue.

The consensus appears to be to get the largest cooler you can get/fit.

I've seen the coolers for 15,000 GVW all the way up to 30,000 GVW.

My concern is, with a cooler this large (30,000 GVW), wouldn't you run into flow issues? Can a stock system be able to move fluid through such a large cooler?

Any info you can provide would be of great assistance.

Thanks.

It is going to make the same politive head pressure, as I am sure the lines are the same diameter in the cooler as the lines feeding it, if not larger.

You will benefit with going bigger as you will have more capacity for fluid and more effecient cooling. I am sure you would be fine with a 15K lbs one.

Also I think you need one already unless you plan on running some major tubing and such...

Good Luck...

Flow isn't usually a problem except in winter. A large cooler adds about 8 feet of 3/8 inch tubing. I've heard that Ford has a "H" plumbing adaptor that allows bypass to happen. Don't know if this is pressure or temperature activated. I don't know if this part exists as I heard this on another board. It does make you wonder why there is no effort to control temperature on transmissions. If you look at the metal lines going from the transmission to the cooler, they are tightly bundled together. This means that heat from the transmission is being transfered to the returning fluid. If you wanted to lower the returning fluid temperature as much as possible, these lines should be seperated. It wouldn't take much, only 1/8 inch would do it. I believe the engineers did this on purpose to moderate the temperature at really low temperatures. I wouldn't worry about it in your climate.

ive had a BIG aftermarket cooler on mine in line with the stocker for over a year, and have had no problems. mine is rated for 30k, and looks like the radiator off of a Fiero;) . as for low line pressure in the winter, i wouldnt know about that. im in the deep south, and our winters are like northern September... but, if it will ease your mind some, just go with a 15k. i used a monster one along with my stocker because of things like my avatar.
