Question, will a FL-1A fit a 2000 Mounty/Explorer 5.0 AWD? I would rather run the bigger filter and only have 2 types to keep on my shelf vice 3. I am sending the wife to walmart and would like to have the request ready. I plan on running 10-40 Mobil 1. Ours has about 42k on it. My first oil change on it since we bought it a little less then a year ago (yes it was changed, just not by me).

what is the size of the current filter on the 5.0l?

It is an off brand and is about 2/3 the length of a FL-1A. It appears there is room for the FL-1. Someone here is bound to have done this or tried it?

its probably is the same then... just a note, the fords use the same pitch..... i currently have the ford fl1a on my toyota pickup... the toyota is supposed to have the fram # 3614 however the 8a which is the fl1a fits as does the 3600 which is the ford 400s used on the 3.0l v6 rangers and otehrs....

the fl1a should be fine on your truck... many of the cheaper brands skimp on the size....

oh yeah, the fram filters suck, so stay away from them, i was jsut using thier part numbers as reference as they are the more common part numbers

I don't think the FL1A will fit because it uses standard threads whereas the FL-820S uses the metric threads. The correct filter is the 820S, and the part number for a Fram filter is PH2.

jman is correct... in fact the walmart computer used to list the explorer filter as the fl1a there is a difference in the threads... why are you running 10-40... thats way heavier than the 5-30 were supposed to be running..

Hey man, the FL-1A will NOT fit the explorer. I bought the Motorcraft FL-1A at Wal-Mart (Yes, Wal-Mart carries Motorcraft, and CHEAP!). I can't say if the threads match, but when I accidently bought the FL-1A and tried to install it, I couldn't even get a thread to grab. It may have been because of Oil Filter cover thing throwing it off, or the threads, couldn't say. In any case, the FL-1A won't work (at least, didn't on my '97 5.0).

Good luck!

Correct Full Length Oil Filter for 5.0 V8 Explorer...

Gentlemen,

Ford Motor Company decided to go Metric for the 5.0 V8 Explorer/Mountaineer in '96 and maintained it through the end of production in 2001. The oil filter used on the older 5.0 Mustangs will not work. Some people put them on anyway, and basically cross-thread them on the engine.

We did some research on this about a year ago and worked with a very smart person at NAPA Auto Parts. We were able to find a full length filter with the correct face and metric threads.

It's the NAPA Gold Oil Filter PN 1087. Don't ask for a replacement filter for the 5.0 V8 Explorer. The filter is not listed in their books as such. Also, if you know someplace that carries Wix brand oil filters, their PN is 551087. Yes, Wix actually makes the filters for NAPA.

We usually put a free filter in every set of our Torque Monster Headers when we ship as a gift.

My understanding is that Wix makes the motorcrafts filters as well. So length isn't the problem but metric threads are. No problem I will go for the metric one.
I am probably going to get a set of those headers eventually. I have to ease my wife into it though. My 5.0 Volvo made her sort of gun shy about modifications to her daily driver. I think one of her manifolds might be devoloping a crack so it could be not far off in the future. Do you do military discounts? ;)
