oil gauge flickering not motor out

My 2000 explorer's oil gauge started flickering crazy couple of days ago. Then the next day the car started tapping. i took it to the ford delearship. they did a diagnostic and said its gonna cost $5000 to get it fixed. they said the motor is out. other people i know with explorers who had the same problems said everyone told them they needed a new motor but turned out that they just needed a new oil pump.

anyone with a similar problem and what the solution was....

Did you stop and check the oil level when the light started flickering?

Get a second opinion from an independent repair facility. I wouldn't trust any dealership.

thanks!...i might just change the oil pump and see if that helps. the oil level was fine.
