Hi all,
What are your thoughts on the above? I just had my oil change by the dealer on Saturday and after driving about 100 miles its already down 2%. I also notice that accelerating and climbing hills are a lot more labored and the beast is now more like a water buffalo just plodding along. I complained to the dealer and they are looking into it today.

Also after starting the car in the driveway there is a loud screeching as though a belt is worn or something - never happened before going to the dealer on Saturday

Just wanted to get your thoughts

Thanks

They didn't reset the monitor after the oil change so it is still counting down as if it didn't change. You can reset it yourself on the left screen.

I have had the screeching belt sound as well, especially during a lot of rain.. had the belt changed and no issues since.

Oops. sorry, I meant to say down 2% from 100% after they had reset due to the oil change.

you do know when doing an oil change you don't get all the oil out, some is trapped in the bearings ,crank, oil galleys, and passageways inside the engine ??

it's possible that it mixed with what was left in there and that brought down the oil life a bit,, , it's only 2 %
2x50x100 =10,000 miles,, so what's the problem ??

Well I didn't think it would go down at 2% for just 100 miles. My concern is more that the engine now labours at even the slightest incline. of course its not a "Sport" but the pick up and go was easy peasy.

The OLM is simply an algorithm based on RPM, temp, etc. There are no sensors that actually "look" at the oil. Starting on page 17 of this document, you can read what it does:

https://etda.libraries.psu.edu/paper/9507/5943

Check with the dealership and see if they reflashed the ECU as part of a campaign or TSB.

Yes.. 1% every 50 miles approximately. If your driving habits turn more extreme, it will fall faster but the norm is about that.

I guess I wouldn't be too concerned about being at 98% but more concerned with the performance. A lot of systems show 99% even though it may be technically 99.9%. I'd just get the performance part checked out and go from there.

They actually did do TSB on it for the navigation indicator being off track. EX is at the dealer now, lets see what they say.

Definitely keep us posted, roamingphantom. How many miles are on your Explorer? I'll hang around this thread to see when you have news from the dealer.

I had the oil change done Oct. 29th and have driven 519 miles (836 km) since then. My OLM is sitting at 85% today. That is probably a bit lower than what one would expect under 'normal' driving but those who have been members here a few years know my driving really doesn't fall into that category. Many of my trips are short ones that don't allow the engine to reach its optimum operating temperature so the OLM takes that into account.

It may be a waste but I change my oil at 5,000 miles especially with my two Ecoboost vehicles and the fact that I'll be keeping them for 10+ years.

If it continues to drop 2% every 100 miles, which I doubt it will, you will be at 0% ay 5,000 miles.

oops.. you are right.. that will teach me to try and do math in the car. I agree, I don't think it will either.

Thanks for the link.

That guys Thesis paper was actually very interesting, now I understand the whole process much better. IMHO there is no way to beat the OLMS.....changing before it tells you to is a waste.

I'd wait til 1,000 miles and see what it says then.

And I'd wait til the dealer had a chance to look at the vehicle to hear what might be an issue.........

Just following up.

Apparently they did a flash for the navigation indicator and that "somehow" messed up "something" that's the "official" answer. I was told they did a re-flash and it seemed to have rectified itself. I picked up the Ex last evening and it feels a lot more responsive actually more responsive than before I took it in initially. So that's good news - I'll put it through some stress over the next few days so lets hope it holds up.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS ALL!!!!

The vehicle mode is probably set as "Tow", rather than "Normal", which just shows a shorter interval based on more "severe-service" driving. Mine is set at that, but since I plan to do the oil changes every 5,000 miles, it's just a reminder. Most of my driving is around-town anyway.

Considering the UOA from the Motorcraft oil at 1,000 miles (my first change), no way would I have let that stuff go out to 5,000 miles or more. Even with M1 now, 5,000 miles at a once-a-year interval is fine by me.

Just checked my OLM and it is down to 66% after 1154 miles. Had oil change done Oct. 29th and monitor was reset at the time. I guess this does show that it takes into account all the short trips I make.

That is quite interesting. I'll change mine at about 4500 - 5000 miles.
