oil smell when heater on

today i turned on my heater and i had a strong smell of oil coming through the vents what could be wrong thanks

Oil leak from the engine bay. I had similar experience but with gas smell. Found the problem 3 years later. Had a slow leaking steel braided fuel line rubbing up against one of the brackets. Didn't notice it until it got a lot worse.
 






I was just wandering what caused this becasue i just changed to synthetic oil at my last oil change and i heard that causes oil leaks is that most liky waht caused it my motor does have 140,000 and still runs strong
 






Its most likely oil seeping past the valve cover gaskets, just take a look at the edges of your valve covers, they probably have oil on them, synthetics tend to find a way through the most minute cracks. Changing the gaskets is no biggy, just make sure you don't get cork ones.
 






It was both my valve covers oil was runnin out of them on to the manifold and the oil pan gasket was leakin so ill replace them and see how that works
