I wasn't exactly sure where to post this so I will try here:

I am 17 and my daily driver is a '95 Toyota Camry V6 because it's very comfortable and useful and because I only occasionally drive my explorer. I would like to make my car slower, yes slower. Don't get me wrong, I love speed, as does any new driver, but that's also the problem. I have no self control and little patience when it comes to driving. I drive at least the speed limit and get annoyed at anybody driving terribly.

I need to slow my car down because I know that I will one day get in a accident if I don't do something about this. I was thinking about mounting something underneath the gas pedal so it wont go too fast when I floor it.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

-Marc

RAW EGG. If you push the pedal like there is an egg under there you will not only have smoother transitions and better fuel economy, but be less likely to get a ticket.
We cannot impart upon you our shared experiences, only the wisdom that comes from being 17 once before!
You will learn as you drive more what works best for you, but just the fact you are asking is a great leap for a 17 yr old!

In the next few years of your life you are going to encounter alot of situations and decisions which require self control. There is usually not a external solution to help you, it has to come from within. Here is a good place to start.

or just trade it for a yugo.

Hey man I know how you feel. I am nearly 21 and just had my first accident. I pushed my truck too hard and slammed into a tree.

Here is my advice. Change your temperament while driving. Think about others on the road and drive to arrive alive. Leave earlier for appointments and don't rush when you are late. The rest is up to you.

Good luck! :salute:

put the car in 3rd gear does you toy have that option? its usually D3

then drive youll only go 50 mph before your revs get so high youll think your car will blow up

to really overcome that, your going to need self control. Takes a while but it will come. Sometimes you have to learn the hard way and that might be an accident just keep that in mind

If you want a slower car maybe you could look at the throttle cable if you car has one. Try to find one thats stretched out or increase the length of it so that the throttle body doesnt fully open when press the gas peddle. Thus decrease your accelerating speed.

wow this is a first.

I find this hilarious.

Just my 1 cent, just control your foot, no need to do anything else.

Trust me, you dont want to put anything under the pedal or whatever, you might need it to go faster sometimes in some situations to avoid collision or anything. It has happened to me before :dunno:

But 95 Camry is not fast by any chance so I dont really see any problem with driving this car?? This is really weird lol

I too was a fast driver but learned by taking it too the track and using the cruise controller.

i was 17 years old at one time with a 350 hp rx7. The only time i got caught going fast was by my aunt who is also my god mother. Lets just say i rather have gotten caught by the police.

I found that using the speed controler that i had on my haltec ECU helped but its also alot to do with self discipline. Once you are on the road a little longer you will slowly relax and calm down with the speed but if that does not work a good ole' ticket usually does the trick.

speed controller should help. but that is only if you want to shell out $$$, it is all FREE if you can just control your foot.

I find myself being more reckless right now than when I was 16 or 17(4 years ago) though. It is prolly cuz of I got a 4.6L V8 in my 04 lol. compared with my old 95 4.0 OHV

So, is your Explorer that much faster than the Camery? Seems to me that a person could over-drive any car and end up wrecked.
You have been driving for a year and are still learning. Part of that learning is to learn responsibility for the privilege of driving. That includes self control.
Dont blame the car. Take responsibility for your own actions and correct them if necessary.
Let me know if you need any more advice.

Best suggestion by far is the throttle cable, bend the bracket so it creates slack if u want, but as someone else mentioned u may need the extra power sometime.

Fast was hyperbole, but both my dad and I agree that the engine is somewhat to big for a relatively light car. It has terrific acceleration because of it. It's also a coupe, making it a bit lighter.

The camry is faster because it's lighter. I also drive the explorer better because I care about it more than the camry. I would not be sad if I lost or sold the camry as I would with the explorer. I should probaby just drive the explorer more because I'll drive slower.

Just grow up a little. Thats all it takes. If you eat to much are you going to have your jaw wired shut? Just keep your foot off the throttle. You have a drivers license, now prove you deserve it. The best thing to make your car slower is YOU.

i used to drive rediculously fast... then i lost my liscense for a bit... that slowed me down

still average about 80-100 on the highwat, im just smarter about it, and thats something that will only come with time.

learn the car and learn how to handle it and yourself

Being 17, I'm guessing you don't have much money (I know I don't and I'm 19). So think about mentally how much gas you waste by flooring it and going faster. Try to put thinking into how much you'll save by making smoother accelerations and slowing down a bit. It will definitely help more than just forcing your car to respond less when you push it.

sell it and buy a diesel. . .seriously, if you don't teach yourself now its only going to get worse imho. . .remember 'speed kills'. . .

but thats off topic, another idea we use for our semi's, is a speed limiter, all of our trucks are limited via computer to 65mph. They have to be with 40,000lbs of parts, takes them a long time to stop.

youn could get the ecu chipped/flashed with a speedlimiter

 X 2.

Learn to take responsibility for your own actions.

Do you get it????

Well, atleast I am taking the initiative by asking for help and realizing I have a problem that needs to be fixed.

I have already began doing things to help me. I printed out pictures to have on my visor that remind me of green driving and high fuel costs. I may also utilize the ecodrive setting on my GPS that grows a little leaf when I drive good.

I also found this thing called a car chip on fuelclinic.com that beeps annoyingly if you do rapid starts, stops, and speed. It also does diagnostic checks and notifies me of my progress. I may buy it if the first two plans don't work. Thanks for all your help :salute:
