Take the driver out, uses much less gas that way

All right all right, I know I bought a truck but ****, can't I have my dreams?

But in all seirousness, My A/C is shot, and I could give a care less.

@ Potomac30, & who ever elce knows, I'm trying to get out everything that has to do with the A/c that I can, I'd bet it hasn't been used for a long time, I mean the belt I just replaced wasn't going over the A/c so I'm ready to get it gone. I got windows, they go up and down, for now. I'm acutaly pissed at the A/c because its in my way of changing my thermostat, well A pipe is. So if you could post a Pic and show me what to chuck thatd be sweet. I'd post a pic as ask you if its what I thought but I can't, or Maybe I have to do some weird stuff to post one.

Thanks.

i took all my ac out also.you can take tbe compresser out also and run a ranger none ac belt.you can also replace the heater/ac box on your fire wall.you can do a search for "ac removal" and all my pic are on there

why are you so worried about weight? seriously.. it's an SUV. even if you reduced the weight by a couple hundred pounds, you're gas milage increase would probably not be noticeable, most of the drag pushing an explorer down the freeway is wind resistance, not weight. for that matter, a better air dam, and/or lowering it will reduce drag, also skinnier tires with smoother tread pattern. run synthetic oils, that will make more difference than weight as well

to give you an example, my '93 explorer gets about 19 mpg freeway, typically. earlier this summer i took my boat up north to a friends house (he was renting a lake house) on that trip i got 17.5mpg.... that's towing a 17' jet boat with a 455 V8 in it... 1.5 mpg difference. not only is that another couple thousand pounds of weight, it's 2 more tires, and more wind resistance.... and 1.5mpg was all the more fuel it took.

heck, waxing you're paint will decrease resistance more than a few pounds off.. i'm serious.

Well, if you already have the non-ac fan belt, and you live in Boston and you paid $600 for the explorer, you might as well remove the ac. Again, it could have pressure on the system, so be careful. I removed the condensor(radiator looking thing), the compressor (the metal dammit with the fan belt pulley wheel on it), the ac hoses that connected everything up, and the dryer(the cylinder near the firewall on the pass side). My ac didn't work and for the cost to replace it vs the book value of the car, it didn't seem worth it. It'll save some weight, be less drag on the engine, and give you more room under the hood to work on the important stuff. If I can drive without AC in SC, Mass should be a breeze... don't remove the heater core though.

i was talking about the box that goes around it,you can swap it for a none ac box and it give you WAY more room

Not sure if yours is 2wd or 4wd, imagining 2wd if you are going for MPG... lol.

So I am not sure if you have it or not but, mine has a skid plate that goes behind the transmission/radius arm cross-member, to protect the transfer-case. Weighs 30lbs easy.

Get rid of that MASSIVE muffler too, that's 20lbs or so.

JD, I left the evaporator on mine mainly because of the fan motor relay is on the housing. And yes, I've already had the fire in the ductwork, so all the leaves and pine needles have been burnt off once and if it happens again, it won't freak me as bad.

Absolutely! I often load my truck up with hundreds of pounds of stuff that needs to go up to the lake house, and drive it back empty, I have never noticed much difference. Towing the 22ft Master Craft is the only thing that makes a big difference.

Also I noticed you live on the east cost. Last time I checked they still had winter there (no global warming yet). You are gonna be very sad this winter when you cant defog the windows. Your a/c does that by removing humidity, so I would suggest repairing the a/c and not ripping it out.

JD, I like the idea of the switch. I really do like the extra space that I'll pick up. I was reading your thread and I'ven't put a belt over my A/c pully. Not sure what size. At autozone and they had an option of w/A/C or w/o A/C. Nice pics by the way:).

Is there anything I should look for when I'm taking out the compressor? It hasn't been used in forever so I'm guessing that it wouldn't be pressurized.
