Ok sports fans, what are the gear ratios for the A4LD and it's descendants(4R, 5R-including the N,S,W)? I've tried googling it but I come up with conflicting info. You see the service info(which I know can sometimes be wrong) and the brochures(which may not be totally accurate) for my 88 Merkur Scorpio claim it has a .63 OD. But everything I find online say that there was no such OD for the A4LD. If I can't find accurate info, how do figure this out? Count teeth on the ODs in question? Any help is much appreciated.

A4LD: 1st 2.47:1
2nd 1.47:1
3rd 1.0:1
4th .75:1 (OD)

5R55 1st 2:47:1
2nd 1:87:1
3rd 1:47:1
4th 1:00:1
5th .75:1 (OD)

Do the math and you will see that it is the A4LD ratios, with an overdriven 1st acting as a 2nd gear.

Expect the N and W which according online sources that I found are something like 3.28 first. But what you are telling me is that there never was a .63 for the A4. As I begin to think about I may have been looking at too many trans ratios, I may confused the A4 for an AOD(4R70W has a .63 OD I believe)...

AOD I cannot speak to. AODE was .67:1. 4R70W is .70:1

Man 0-2 tonight LOL. AOD and AODE were virtually identical, AODE was like the A4LDE(2 solenoid vb I believe...

I think you are right on that (eg. ratios) but I cannot speak to it. Yeah the AOD became the AODE about the same time the A4LD became the A4LDE (which lasted but a VERY short while before the naming protocols of FORD trannies once again changed.)
