I would like to know - if anyone has an answer to why they tick - please share. I changed the oil the other day and put another quart of rislone in it and it still ticks and it is louder since the oil change (10w 30)

Depends on the source of the tick. If it's a crank bearing, yes. If it's a broken piston ring, yes. If it's a lifter or rocker arm, no; you're just going to gradually lose more power until you fix it.
Lifters usually tick because they're starved for oil, or (less likely) the pushrod or rocker arm is worn to the point that the lifter can't compensate anymore. (I have had a cam lobe fail and cause ticking and eventual misfire, but that was an aftermarket cam and they're never as good as stock.)
Possibly your tick goes away with warm-up because the oil passage leading to one of the lifters is partially blocked. Once the oil warms up and thins enough to get past the blockage, the lifter gets enough oil to pump up again.
But I'd say it's most likely the lifter just isn't holding oil anymore; it's draining when you stop the engine. Try this test: Drive a good 10 miles for a solid warm-up on a hot day. Shut the engine down for 30 minutes, then restart. Is it ticking? If so, your lifter isn't holding oil, but it's no big deal. The noise may annoy you, but if it goes away it's not causing any damage.
Hmm - not good news.. sounds like I need a new engine. It has 300,000km on it.. but no rust (vancouver bc) The tick is loud now and the truck mileage is terrible - 400km / 250 miles a tank hwy
I am going to look at a 91 2dr standard, one (which I like better than the 4dr) later today.
Has anybody had continued or long term sucess in adding an oil addtive or engine treatment to keep the valvetrain/lifters quieter? If so, what brands and should it be added at every oil change or once in a while?
Is there other ways to clean the oil passages, I'm not too eager to put ATF in the engine.
One common issue with the Ford engines is type of oil and filter.
Fram filters used with Pennzoil will almost always cause a tick. Change to Motocraft filters and a good grade of oil -- Valvoline, Havoline, Mobil 1, Amsoil, etc., and most of the time the ticking will be less noticable.
Other than that, I always figured that if my Ford motors weren't making noise, they were not running...
Fram filters although they are constructed more economically flow freely with the best of filters.
I ran Mobil1 5W30 with Fram, Baldwin, Wix and Pure One filters, with engine ticking (once with lucas synthetic additive). When I switched to Pennzoil Platinum 5W30 my engine suddenly quieted down considerabley to where I don't notice any ticking. I have also had a Fram, Wix and now Pure Ones with this setup and no ticking. Seems that the Mobil1 was my ticking issue. In both instances I also had a bypass filter in the setup.
http://www.auto-rx.com/ has been getting very good results from BITOG forum. I just started my 1500 mile cleaning cycle with a new TP filter in my bypass setup. I wonder what it will collect in that time.
My dad always used atf in his cars when the lifters started to make some nose and it always made it go away . he said it helpped break down the varnise and sludge that would block the oil hole or make them stick. I have done the same now for over 30 years with no trouble .right now my ex only ticks when it has sat over night and or a few day but it is gone with in a min or two .
I have done it as a flush and also as a replacment but never more then one qt.
