I've got an '03 XLT 4.0, 5 speed automatic (code 5R55S) with the 45 axle code (3.55 open diffs) and i want to know what the possibility of going down to a junk yard and tearing the front and rear limited slip diffs out of an older explorer or ranger.

I'm assuming that if it's possible to simply drop in the LSD's they would need to be 3.55's or if I found a set of 4.10's would that work too? I'd really appreciate some insight on this, thanks.

don't forget you have a fully independent suspension. . .1st and 2nd Gens, Rangers nada.
Got look for Explorer/Mounty 3rd gen. . they came with 3.73's, if it had the Class III hitch.

I'm not aware of a limited slip dana 30 for the explorer. And there were no 4.10's for the 3rd gen explorer only 3.55 or 3.73. It'd be easier to re gear your truck and put in a limited slip of that's what you want. I've got some rebuilt w/ new ford racing clutches for 190.00.

So a differential out of a truck with a floating axle is different from one out of a independent suspension? I wouldn't have thought that

You can swap carriers, yes. But chances are the carrier is worn and you'd have to rebuild the limited slip anyway.

I don't think he could swap the carriers on the rear... The rear CV joints are held into the side gears with circlips on the IRS 3rd gens, wheras the solid axles use c-clips and a cross-pin. The two sets of side gears might be interchangable, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Did they not offer a LSD in the 3rd gens? I think that when they added the stability control software, they may have gone to the electronic traction control...

They did make them with limited slips, but the truck was handed down to me I didn't have much of a choice on the axles. How would I go about installing a locker anyway? (If i somehow did manage to come up with a thousand or so dollars.. >.< )
