Hi all! Lisa here,

Currently own a '98 that it seems to be time to move on from :( ; wish I could keep it and a newer one but unfortunately I don't have space for 2 vehicles.

In any case 8/19 I put a $300 deposit (non-refundable) on a 2010 EB Explorer 4wd 4.0L V6 EFI with 62,000 miles on it. $12.5k which all in w/taxes/registration = $13.9k. Very clean w/some minor dings but guess that's to be expected being 8 yrs. old. I am aware that a V8 would have been better but I was unable to find one (or a Mountaineer) w/low miles in the general vicinity and I've been looking for a while.

So looking for opinions...Thought on price? Do I move forward with the purchase or run (if I still can) and forego my deposit. Picking up tomorrow night so I'd love to hear from folks ASAP; especially those with the same vehicle. Would you buy it again? - I have pics/vin/carfax if helpful.

Thanks!

Mileage is low but 14k seems high for that vehicle. Maybe I am wrong, anybody else ?

Those darn taxes. Actually will be the most I ever spent on a vehicle. Any thoughts on the vehicle itself? I've got 173,200 miles on my '98 V6 daily driver and I'll expect (want) to go at least that far with this one.

2 years ago I purchased a 2010 mountaineer AWD 4.0 with 58,000 miles with full service records super clean 9.5 out of 10. Still smells new. No issues. Paid 11,500.00. See if there are service records if purchasing from a dealer. Test drive when cold and hot. Listen for engine noise on startup and transmission when at operating temperatures. Pay close attention when warm going into reverse and any transmission flairs on the 2-3 shifts. Pay close attention to front end noise for wheel bearings. You Live in the salt belt so check for rust. Check passenger side second door rocket panel for bubbles or blisters because rust will be under there. How do I know . I live in Vermont and see this on them. My mountaineer was never driven in the winter.

It does seem a little high to me too, but hopefully It comes with a decent warrantee at that price. I’d like to see six-month 6000 mile complete vehicle coverage. Too bad you can’t keep the other one as well, I am sure it’s worth way more to you than what you will get selling or trading it in

Car fax says value is $14.7 shows 1 previous owner (NJ) and regular dealer maintenance. Report says 4 things about tranny in 2014; checked, removed and reinstalled, rebuilt, replaced. Not real savvy here so does that mean it was rebuilt and reinstalled or replaced with a new one? Did not notice any engine/tranny/bearing noise. Vehicle is also very clean to the point I'm thinking it had been garage kept. 90 day warranty with purchase.

Come with 90 day "car fax" warranty which I can extend with $$. I seem to be more bothered about selling the 98 than I am excited about getting the newer 2010. Will truly be sad to see it go. People keep saying once I drive the new one for a week I'll forget all about my '98. Definitely drives different than what I'm used to.

Sounds like the trans was replaced or rebuilt but I have never heard it put that way. When I did auto repair it would say on the bill removed transmission rebuilt reinstall. Or remove transmission install used or new transmission. Love to know the mileage when this was done.

29,280 miles. Do you think I can/should call the dealer to confirm. Will they actually tell me? Just called the dealer, receptionist said they should be able to explain to me but went to voicemail. Hopefully they call me back.

I had a 99 Mountie 5.0 and the ride difference is not even close in favor of the 2006-2010. It was my wife's daily driver and she was afraid of taking a turn at higher speed in fear of rolloover. It was very unstable.
The new ones are way better and roomier.

29,280 miles. I find that hard to believe. I would call and confirm. Have not heard of one going bad at that mileage.

Talked w/MM at original dealership. He said they rebuilt the original tranny and that vehicle very clean and regularly maintained. Other than regular maintenance the rear brake pads were replaced at 51k miles Dec 2016.

Yes. I've typically been a bit of a lead foot myself and can attest to the feeling in my '98. I'm still gonna be sad when it's time to say goodbye.

Ok. If you purchase see if you can get a little more warranty. I like my mountaineer a lot. I service no less then 3,000 miles and never let it go to 5,000 miles. Average 3,200 miles.

Seems I posted a (separate) reply at the time you

posted separately at same time, not sure if you saw it. MM with original dealership said they rebuilt the original. Tells me it's not that unusual? Also said rear brake pads replaced Dec 2016 @ 51k miles and has always been regularly maintained and file states very clean vehicle. Nothing in it for this guy to mislead me as they're not the ones selling it but...

Thanks, truly appreciate all the insight by you and others.

You are welcome. Hope everything works out good for you.

That price seems ridiculously high for a V6 ( seems high even for a V8). I am currently trying to sell me 2010 V6 4x4. Trying for $8000 but that seems like it might be a bit high.... I had my transmission rebuilt at 112k, has 127k now.... The low milage on the one you are looking at his good. At least chances are you have another 30-40k before you will run into any major trouble...

I just checked KBB for what's it's worth and average trade in value for 2010 loaded EB v6 in 'Excellent" condition is 8500. It means that they gave someone probably 6500-7000 for the car. They are trying to make 6-7000 profit on it. That price is way too high unless you get unlimited 150,000 warranty on it.

I looked up Lisa’s EB 4wd Explorer on KBB with 62,000 miles and excellent condition, private party purchase price top range would be $13400. Remember she is near NYC. So IMHO, Lisa if you want it - go for it.

I too paid top dollar for my low mileage (59k) 2010 Limited 2 years ago and I couldn’t be happier. Just remember it is a used car and will require repairs sooner than a brand new Explorer. But of course will not cost $38000.

Good Luck
