Year, Model & Trim Level
98 XLT Explorer
howdy, all. Tomorrow we're pleased to look at a 98 XLT, keyless, rear air, 'tow package', OHC 6 for around 10.5k. oh yeah, 62000 miles. What rear end ratios were available this year? Limited slip available? How can I decipher the VIN or the door tag to confirm that it has the real towing package and not just a dealer installed hitch receiver? How to confirm (without jacking it up and spinning) if it's LSD? I know on my 86 F150 I could figure out the axle weight ratings and gear ratios and everything from the letter codes on the door plate.

Any other general info or warnings about this year are much appreciated.

Should the timing belt be done at 60k?

Respectfully submitted and etc and stuff

VIN Codes

This covers the VIN data plates, door codes. Hope this helps.:)

All Explorer engines use a timing chain (or chains) and not a timing belt. Unless a problem is diagnosed with the chain, it doesn't need to be replaced as a maintenance item. As you decode the VIN, make note of which engine it has. The 4.0 SOHC engine (code E) has problems with the cam tensioners and the intake manifold o-rings that you will want to have a dealer check and see if they've been taken care of.

98 VIN id and issues

Thanks for the help. I confirmed the LS and tow package; the car is definitely a honey; and now it rests in my garage until the 91 is sold. I'll follow up on the concerns mentioned. Bye.
