We were meant to be away this weekend on a rally - backed the Ex out of the drive, went to pull forwards - and it cut out. Would not restart - I tried for a good half hour - so we called out the RAC - only to get a 3 hour wait. When the guy finally arrived and turned the key she started immediately... Talk about egg on face...

When I was trying to start her though she just spun over with the odd cough every now and then which to me is the classic sign of fuel starvation. Couple this to the high pitched screeching sound from the back of the car when I first started her this morning and I have a nasty feeling the fuel pump is on it's way to the great maker in the sky.... Am I correct in thinking on the Explorer the fuel pump is actually in the fuel tank???

Also having issues with the radio - it turns on OK, you drive down the road then it turns off without touching it only to come back on shortly after - I'm guessing a loose connection somewhere but all the multiplugs are a tight fit. Aerial no longer retracts and no sound of the motor trying to get it down either...

Oh yes - and sporadically the Temp gauge will shoot up to the top of the scale them immediately fall back to normal....... Any one got any thoughts on this at all???

Could the non-starting be the crank sensor - this happened on mine, the connector had furred up through lack of use - RAC man cleaned it and it started and off it went but you may want to get someone with the right software to read the codes - thats how my RAC guy diagnosed my fault once he had plugged his laptop into the car,

Have you tried putting a new GEM in the dash? see if that helps?

Si

No - I haven't - may be worth a shot.. Where can we get these from these days - last time I tried getting Ex parts from a Ford dealership I just got blank looks....

Thanks for the pointer - our local garage (non-Ford I hasten to add) is checking it out for us on Monday. I'll ask them to run the diags and see. Just odd that after a prolonged rest it started immediately without the awful high pitched screeching from somewhere in back....

Just a note on the crank sensor. It is a common issue with non starting but AFAIK it doesn't cause the engine to stop if it fails with engine running.

OK - good news is - it's definitely the fuel pump - it failed again in the garage!!

Bad news is - it's the fuel pump. According to Ford UK the price is £450 for a replacement - but they stopped making them 3 years ago so are no longer available!!

Anyone got any ideas where we can get one from ASAP - part numbers are:

F7AU9350AA
10/29/970753

Thanks Howard :-)

Next question then - do we have the OHV or the SOHC lump in our Explorers??

Talking to Rock Autos the two are not compatible pump-wise!!

Thanks again Howard - part now ordered - Delphi part #FE0245, total cost inc. shipping & our VAT is £137.69.

A bit different from the £450 Ford were quoting had they had one.....

All sorted now folks - Rock delivered the part within a couple of days (pretty good considering the time of year I thought) and our local garage fitted it for us as they had the Ex up on the ramps already with the tank out.

As a side note - the garage manager blew up his Delphi representative as he'd told them Delphi did not make the part - I imagine he was a touch put out to shown a Delphi part that, according to him, did not exist!! :)
