I'm going to be down at the Outer Banks in late July (21st-28th or so) with my family. It'll be me and my stock '97, my father with his stock '04, and my Uncle with a stock Expedition. Nothin' exciting obviously, sorry to disappoint ;). We're renting a house on the beach for a week, and I figured I'd drive down and have some fun running the dunes. Anybody gonna be down there around that time? I'd love to meet up with some of you guys and check out your rigs. Let me know.

Where are you staying?

The house is on Corolla beach.

Corolla is the north end of the beach. The sand is not to bad up there. Stay off the dunes, it is like a $500 fine. Also whach out for the stumps. Bring a shovel, and run about 20 psi in your tires and you wont have a care. Also if you check in time is 4:00 plan to arrive by 2:00 and hang out. The bridge that crosses the sound gets really packed around check in time. We always get out to the beach a little early to beat the traffic.

Stay off the dunes? Well THAT sucks. That's what I was excited about. So we basically have to stay on the flat sand of the beach?

The dunes are covered in Sea oats and basically hold the Outter Banks together. You are not even supposed to walk through them, off the paths. If you want to be challenged go south to Avon or Buxton. Avon has soft deep sand, and not dunes but humps where the tide has washed out sections of beach. Buxton is interesting because you can drive (on sand) to the point of Cape Hatteras, which impressive on a calm day. Bring a shovel, tire pressure gage, strap and cash.

I've got all of that on my checklist. Throwing on towhooks and Ranchos before I'm down there as well. Thanks a bunch for the help, UM.

if your gonna go all the way down to cape hatteras , you might as well take the free ferry across the ocean and see oracoke island ,you just drive up on it (word of caution;if anyone feeds the seagulls while your on the ferry get back in your truck and roll the windows up !!) i dont know if you can drive on the beaches there but it`s worth the trip to see the wild horses that are on the island. there was a story in the news last week about developers wanting to comercialize the land that is reserved for the horses and use it for hotel resorts ,, and if that happens there wont be anymore wild horses to see .
