Can newer model keypads be used on older models? let's say 01-04 sport trac or explorer or even a ranger on a 96?

I put a 2001 Sport keypad in my '95 after the old lights crapped out. It plugged right in if this is the one you're talking about. The connector was a different color (white vs. green IIRC) but it fit, clipped in the same way, and works perfectly...

is there any way to get the code for the keypad and where about would it be if its in the truck?

Robb posted this at http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showpost.php?p=788407&postcount=2

Look in the "jack" compartment in the rear cargo area, on the driver's side. If you look in there towards the front of the vehicle, you will see a black or gray box. On that box will be a sticker, and somewhere on that sticker will be a 5-digit code. That is your keypad code.

This does not work on some newer models, but check just in case.

For 2001~2003 Explorer Sport, Sport Trac and Ranger, the CSM module should be located in the dash above the HVAC plenum. You must remove the passenger airbag to access the module. The 5-digit keypad code will be stamped on the module label.

already checked there, ripped the dash apart, took the computer out still nothing.

See above- edited...

i was afraid you were gonna say something about the airbag, really dont want to play with that. any other places by chance???

Ah- if you unhook your battery and let it sit for 1/2 hour (heck- let it sit overnight with the battery unhooked on a Friday/weekend night or something if you're worried- no chance it will go off then) then remove it, they're no big deal. I pull them out all the time.

The only other place I think it is, would be in the owners packet/folder thingie by the manuals, on a card.

cant really unhook the battery, as a firefighter, cant really wait to hook up a battery for a call, i think i might try a mirror

i checked above the plenum and it wasnt there, is there anyplace it could be or what does it look like?
