Over drive flashing on and of every now and then when it wants to

I bought a 1997 ford explorere xlt 4x4 great truck but every now and the the over drive light will com on and flsh for a while and then go out and ill notice my rpms a 70 are at 2500 when it is not flasing but when it is flashing at 70 i am 3000 rpms any suggestions would be a great help.

The flashing overdrive off light means that a problem was detected and a code was stored. Also the transmission goes into "limp" mode. I recommend getting the codes read to determine the problem and if possible stop driving the vehicle until the problem is corrected.
