I have a 1995 XLT. The Overdrive light blinks constantly. The transmission shifts hard and has a clunk sound out of first into second and down into first when slowing down. If you unplug the battery the problem stops for a while. I took it to a transmission shop and they put it on the diagnostic machine. They told me that the code read "excessive clutch slippage" and that the only way to repair was to rebuild the transmission. ONLY $1,250.00!!!!! Common sense tells you that it surely doesn't need rebuilt if the problem only happens with the light on. Someone else told me that it was a sensor going bad, but without them putting it on the machine that they couldn't pinpoint which one. If anyone has had this problem, would you please let me know what the cause was and how much it cost to repair. Thanks ;)I

I've had it happen twice...both rebuild's. For that price....I definately wouldn't let it slip away.

My '95 did the same thing. Unfortunately, you'll have to rebuild the tranny.

Similar thing happened to me. ended up haveing a new transmission put in verses a rebuild because my Dad has had bad luck with rebuilds. I hear of others who go through rebuilds a lot also. So far the new tranny has been better then ever.
