overdrive light flashing -early sign of death

today im in my ex telling everone how well my truck is running... just replace alt/batt yesterday..truck died on me in rush hour traffic. i finally got her going and the overdrive light started flashing and i think i hear sound below when shiffting...anybody might know what is going on...you think its okay to drive or should i have it towed to get fixed

Yes, it is safe to drive. Just lost the tranny in my 97'. That was the first symptom, the light will blink while the tranny is hot, if the truck cools down for say 2 hours and then you start it up the light will stay on for a bout a mile. then go out. all will be fine until it heats up again. The valve bodies are sticking in the Tranny, it causes hard shifting. The next step will be the 4X4 light flashing and then all hell broke loose on mine. I sheared the parking pin when I shifted to reverse, it didn't engage. I had it all checked out, the quote was $500 to $3200 depending how bad once they opened it up. I sold it "AS IS" and bought the 94' I am now driving...

Good Luck!!! Per FORD, a fluid change with a friction modifier may give you a a few thousand miles before it craps out. It did not help me.

Yes, get the codes...please help us help you. Odds are your computer noticed that the input vs expected output shaft speeds were different ... slipping somewhere... that does not, standing alone mean really bad things.... in every case. Noises are not good... but first things first..

ps. At this stage friction modifiers are just mouse milk for your trannie... forget that. Let's figure out what the range of possibles are.

I suggest limiting how far you drive with the light flashing. When the OD light starts flashing, the trans goes into cripple/limp mode which causes it to shift extra hard which is not good. Also, on the 95's, it a somewhat common problem to have the OD light start flashing. Many times, disconnecting and reconnecting the battery will put the light out and the trans back into normal mode. I've had my 95 for 3 years, and about every 6-9 months the light starts flashing, I pull codes(reveals nothing), reset the computer, and I'm good for another 6-9 months. Obviously, pull the codes before trying the disconnect battery routine.

95's had a problem with a pcm fault causing a code that I seem to remember as being 645, but I'd have to look it up to be sure.
