I dont know if this helps but check your alternator. OD is electronic on explorers and the voltage regulator is built into the alternator. If the voltage regulator is dead your OD wont work. When mine did this I changed my alternator and it worked fine. I would check minor things first cause alternators are expensive.

I have a 93' Explorer XLT 4x4 and does the same exact thing. It refuses to shift into overdrive. You mentioned something about the alternator? If this is true, wouldn't your voltage guage on your instrument panel show signs of a problem with the electrical system? Suppose it is the alternator, how do I go about testing to see for sure without removing the alternator to begin with? All of my other accessories appear to be working fine.

i might add, every other thing works great, no dimming headlights, i can disconnect the bat and it still runs on the alternator. every other shift goes smoothly, it just refused to OD which goes through some gas while on the road!

You haven't mentioned, does the OD OFF light stay on, flash ?
If it stays on but won't go into OD, it may be the button/switch (I got a 95).
This same thing happend on my Volvo. It was the OD relay..rebuilt one=$25
I have a problem like this w/my Ranger..OD OFF light flashes .. but only about once a week. All other shifts are good w/OD OFF flashing..I just don't get it.
I'm taking mine to my tranny guy Monday, along with a TSB regarding the OD OFF light flashing with no other shifhting problems. It points out a $60 TCC (Torque Convertor Control Soloniod..)
We'll see.

mine does not have a light, the o/d is right beside 1,2, 3 and od and the column shift....not that little button on the end of the stalk or on the dash.
