Twice now, I have used the Explorer off-road on extended trips (4 days). Both times, after about 6 hours, the OD/OFF light in the lower right corner of the dash starts blinking. It will still go into overdrive (auto trans) but it feels like the torque converter is locked. Hard shifts, but GREAT gas mileage. Anyone have any ideas what the cause/fix is? The condition clears itself after about 3 days of normal driving.

Thanks,

Ed

When the light came on, did you have OD on or off?

OD switch was on. I was in 4WD all day, running both slow and fast. Probably had OD actually kick in once or twice.

The flashing OD light is used as an indicator whenever anything is amiss with the transmission, whether it is related to the OD or not. It could have been a problem with your torque converter since you said it felt like it was locked. It could also be that the transmission temperature sensor detected a higher than normal temperature, or any other number of things that could go wrong with the transmission. The only way to know for sure is to get the codes read while the light is flashing.
