Got the fan motor recall done last year, however 2 months ago when my 2011 explorer was in a traffic jam, the engine overheated , once the car drives at normal speed, the temperature came done and the warning went away.

During the traffic jam, I could hear the fan runing every time I stepped on the gas, but it seems the fan wasn't running long enough the take the heat away.

Is this a design defect, anything can be done ?

I went to the dealership today, they said if they can't replicate it, they will charge me for inspection.

I'm assuming you are talking about having the Customer Satisfaction Program 12B36 which reprogramed the module governing the speed of the cooling fans.
There is also a TSB 11-7-21 COOLING FAN NOISE, LACK OF A/C AND/OR OVERHEAT CONDITION. That is the one that I believe would apply to your current situation.
There are quite a few members on this Forum that had their cooling fans replaced under that TSB. The problem was mainly with the 2011 Explorers.
Here is one fairly long thread you may want to check out;

If you do a 'Search' on "overheating", you will find several more.

If the warning came on, it stored a code. dealership can scan for the code therefore no reason for them to charge you for

Hi hpad06,

I wanted to touch base with you and see how things are going with your Explorer. If you need me to step in and assist, send me a PM with your VIN, dealer, mileage, daytime phone number, and full name.

Thanks!

Crystal

Yesterday I heard the fan noise suddenly became louder after driving for 40 minutes, so I checked the temp, and found out the cooltant temp dropped to the rock bottom. So I stopped the car, turned off the engine and restarted again, the cooltant temp immediately come back.

Seems to me the cooltant temp sensor was not getting the temperature correctly at the moment and made the fan running weird.

Thanks Crystal! I have sent you a message.

I am from Canada

Thanks Crystal, no one has contacted me yet.

Today my explorer overheated again during slow traffic, and I took a picture of it...

Hi hpad06,

I recommend making an appointment at your dealership so they can assist. I sent a message to my contact at Ford Canada asking them to follow-up with you. Please reach out to me if you need any additional assistance.

Hi Crystal, I realize this forum is quite old now but wondering if you might be able to field a quick question regarding this TSB and Ford Canada. I contacted my dealership a couple of times on this matter; was told that it my vehicle did not require their checking it. Last week my wife was driving our 2011 Ford Explorer Ltd. in the City; it overheated .. couldn't be driven. Took it to the closet dealer; who informed me a couple days later the Fan Motor is broken, repair around $900 to $1,000 and not covered under Extended Warranty / ESP Plan (expired in early May 2014). Wouldn't or couldn't this clearly be because of this exact same TSB? Thanks

Welcome to the Forum 4Buckster.:wavey:
A TSB is only performed free of charge as long as the vehicle is under the factory or ESP warranty. Once the warranty expires, you will have to pay to have a TSB done. Brittany or Kwasi (FordServiceCA) could help in getting this in the hands of the Regional Customer Service manager but don't get your hopes up for warranty coverage.
You can PM them using this link if you wish;

When you PM, be sure to include your full name, best daytime phone number, VIN, mileage, and servicing dealership in your message.

Which ESP do you have? If it is the Premium one, it most certainly is covered. The Premium is the only one worth getting.

Hi Peter thanks I appreciate the quick reply.
Re-reading my post I realized it was a bit confusing; to clarify ..
I enquired with my dealership on the engine fan TSB in 2012 & 2013; while under full warranty and informed that it (the TSB) did not apply to my Vehicle.
My Standard Factory Warranty (3yr / 60,000km) warranty expired in early May 2014 but I do have the Extended Warranty to 5yr/100,000km. The Vehicle mileage was around 66,000 kms on it when the fan motor went last week.
Thanks again for the info Peter.

Good call blwnsmoke; I have to be honest - I don't have a clue. When I called Ford Canada Customer Service on Friday they said I don't have "that" ESP I have a "Maintenance" ESP. I'm checking that information as well (I have all my paperwork at the Accountant's).

Hi 4Buckster,

As Peter pointed out, my Canadian colleagues will be in the best position to help you out. Send them a PM and they'll do what they can to assist.

Thanks Crystal I did just that a few minutes ago :)
Appreciate the quick reply, have a great day!

Don't confuse maintenance with an ESP. If your terminology is correct, a maintenance plan covers things like oil changes and other fluids, brakes and wipers etc. This is not a repair warranty.

As Peter said, do not get your hopes up BUT with how well documented this issue is and Ford knows damn well, they should cover it, it is the right thing to do.

Stay calm, be polite..

Thanks 'blwnsmoke', I totally agree :) polite wins even when ya lose ;)
I get it about there being a distinct difference between "maintenance" plan vs ESP plan. I think the confusion for me is that some folks at the dealership and customer service have told me that yes I do have ESP Coverage for the motor and transmission to 5yr/100,000km but not anything else. Hey I'm the first to admit my bad - guess I should've read better hehe ... What gets me? I bought a 2011 Lincoln MKX at the exact same time and never once any problem with service or mis-interpreting coverage I do (or don't have). The folks on here have been GREAT so that's definitely one silver lining :) I'll keep you posted. Cheers!

"I do have ESP Coverage for the motor and transmission to 5yr/100,000km but not anything else."

That is the factory Drivetrain Warranty. That isn't actually an ESP warranty.
