94 XLT 4.0
I've got a stock 94 XLT with 4.0. Ever since I got it, it pings when under strain, figured it is a sensor/computer problem or at worst a stretched timing chain.

Now ever since spring, I noticed the thing runs a little hot. It's not acting like a thermostat- the heat builds up on the highway especially going up hills, lots more pinging. OK, I ****** the cooling system and refill. It's OK for a week or so.

Today, on the highway about 10 minutes after I put the AC on, the temp gauge goes up, way up. I stop, boiling over. After 4 hours and about 10 gallons of water begged at gas stations, I make it home. A little bit of leaves and crap in the front of the cooling hardware, I clean it out, not much help. Fan clutch looks OK.

So you know what that means. A half mile walk to the store and $200 later, I'm the proud owner of a brand new plastic and aluminum radiator. I replace it, surprisingly easy job, did it at night in the rain. I fill it up and take it for a ride. 10 minutes later, wham, temperature is up again. Looks like I didn't refill it sufficiently, so I let it cool a little and fill it again. (After all this, I'm still not blowing steam out my tailpipe, amazing engine.)

So far, so good. I ****** the cooling system again to make sure there is no crap left in there from the old radiator. It doesn't look like it's overheating again, but this was a cool rainy night. I'm a little shaky about taking it out on a long trip or towing anything.

Anybody else have any overheating experience? Specifically, is there some weird quirk, computer or otherwise with this engine that can cause a chronic overheating problem like this? Any help greatly appreciated thanks.

Lotsa things to try...

Check for vacuum leaks, they'll make your X run lean and heat up.
Pinging can be caused by bad intake gaskets and intake needing re-torque.
Bad EGR can cause pinging and overheating.
Dirty MAS can cause the same prob.
Carbon buildup in the engine ditto.
Plugged cat convertor and/or muffler will heat the motor up.
Bad O2 Sensors.
Thermostat
Bad Radiator Cap

Too many things to guess at....any "Check Engine" Light on?

I went thru the same problem a year ago with my 94 X. Turned out to be a combo of a couple of things mentioned above. It still runs hot in real hot weather with A/C on in stop 'n go or climbing unless I'm doing over 50.

Do a search on Overheat...there's LOTSA X's who have had the same problem

Good luck!

One possibility after your replacemant , you need to " burp " your radiator. Fill it to the top , run it for ten minuts let it cool then top it off again. It is just how it sounds , you are burping the cooling system , getting all the air bubbles out of the system.
If I were to wager a guess , you had a clogged radiator you should be fine now if my guess is right.

that sounds about right. i had ot do the same thing with my wife's old car.

Thanks for the advice. The final answer:

Radiator- BAD
Fan Clutch- BAD
Pressure Cap- BAD
Thermostat- BAD (AND improperly installed!)

All replaced- truck runs GOOD!

Yikes , let me guess
Cha-ching !!!

My Explorer just started overheating w/check engine
light on. This just happened suddenly. This was the first
day I had the AC on (temp didn't go down w/heat on).
With engine still running I tried to take the rad. cap off,
but the antifreeze was spraying out, it didn't seem real hot, though. I didn't hear any "strange" noise's. It seems like the classic blown thermostat. BTW temp did
go down some when the AC was turned off. Before I
take it to my Ford dealer to get hosed (gotta find another mechanic), I'd like to get some feedback from
ya'all. Thanks as this is my first post here!

You say it sisn't seem too hot.... fif you check the temp?

Did you run a scan with an OBD II reader?

aldive, no I don't have the means to scan codes (the
Ford dealer does that for me). This is my first "new"
truck, my other one was an '83 Chevy I had redone.
Things were a lot simplier. Seems like the same old
problems we had (in older vehicles) sure are more com-
plicated! In your opinion is it okay to drive 3 miles to the
dealer or have it towed? I don't want anymore $$$ ie:
new engine! BTW guys (gals) ya'all got a real nice
Forum here. No porblems seem too small to get a re-
sponse:D Thanks for bthe info, I'll give it to my Dealer?

Sounds like your T-Stat is stuck closed. I'd replace it first before doing anything else. Turning the A/C alone shouldn't cause overheating

Thanks guys (gals) for your response. It was indeed the
thermostat as we all figured it would be. I was afraid it
wouldn't be this simple. That was the most expensive
thermostat I have ever bought: $30.00!

It must be that time of year. Mine started going up to the A and L on Monday. I read all the posts about replacing water pumps, radiators ,clutch fans and thermostats. I hoped it was the thermostat, so I decided to replace that first. That did it. Now it's running between the N and O.:D Man... $30 for a thermostat!  I paid $7 for a Stant at Autozone. I hope I don't regret that !:shoot:
