Have done enough reading that I am cross eyed. 99 4.0 SOHC. 305k miles. Past several months the truck has been having an idle issue. Come to a stop, idle will hang up around 1200 rpm. Idle will drop to below 500rpm...and the oil pressure gauge will bounce to 0. Some times it stalls, some times it recovers.
On to today. Took off from a light and it stated bucking...badly. Did not matter how heavy footed I was it was bucking...almost like it was dropping a complete bank. On level ground, once up to cruising speed it stopped. Least little bit of throttle and it started bucking again. Have to climb some hills to get home so I stopped at the Post Office and called my wife. Had her bring my lap top, which has scanner software. Code p0171, with p0172 pending. Soon as I cleared the light it came back on. Came home got the trailer, loaded it up and bought it home.
Seems like a lot of folks are have had the o2 sensor go bad.
Have not looked at the air filter in 4 months or so, last i looked it was clean. We do have all sorts of critters in our area, thinking that it may be time to make sure the air filter has not become caked with crap.
Cleaned the MAF sensor about 2500 miles ago. Replaced the PCV valve about 7500 miles ago. Plugs and wires...well....have about 175k on them. Planning on replacing the valve cover gaskets, they are dripping badly. Figured I would put plugs in it then.
Back to the code...can the o2 sensor be trouble shot on a bench? I see Amazon has the set of 4 for under $50....I can probably do better at the Napa I deal with....
So where do I start?
