Recently had a P0174 code. Cleaned the MAF but engine light stayed on. I then taped the pcv elbow to see if light would go off. Light was still on.

Disconnected battery and the engine light went off for two weeks but now it's back on throwing the same P0174 code.

Any suggestions? Should I start by replacing the pcv elbow? Clean the MAF again?

Thanks,

Mark

i have seen a lot of posts that people are getting two codes (P0171 and P0174).

Does it narrow anything down by mine throwing only P0174?

Basicaly, you have a lean condition on the drivers side engine cylinders. A code P0174 may mean that one or more of the following has happened: The MAF (Mass Air Flow) Sensor is dirty or faulty. Note: The use of "oiled" air filters can cause the MAF to become dirty if the filter is over-oiled. There is also an issue with some vehicles where the MAF sensors leak the silicone potting material used to protect the circuitry. There could be a vacuum leak downstream of the MAF sensor.

What symptoms are you experiencing, if any? Rough idle, stalling, surging, vacuum noise, etc?

Search p0174 in this 2001-05 Sport Trac sub forum. Definitely an issue on the drivers side bank.

I bought the truck for my son so unfortunately i do not get to drive it as much as i would like to. Seems to be running ok though.

I cleaned the MAF Sensor a couple weeks ago. I may try hitting it again. I also taped the pcv elbow (did not take it off). So I will probably try and figure out how to take it off and check it a little better.

I do have some type of oiled filter but I have never oiled it since I bought the truck.

Would a split elbow throw off both codes are could it throw off just the one?

The P0171 code is a lean passenger side bank, the P0174 is a lean drivers side bank. A bad PVC ( positive crankcase venilation) hose would have a huge vacuum leak, and it would toss codes on both sides. I'll bet you a case of Schlitz that is your problem. Used to check for vacuuum leaks in the old days with a can of starting fluid, if you sprayed it around the hoses and the RPM's went up, you knew you had a leak. But that was then this is now...geeze, I am showing my age!

Mustang - I'm only getting the one code (P0174) not both.

Does that eliminate the pcv elbow as being the problem?

nope

Is the only thing holding the pcv elbow a clamp at both ends? I don't have to remove the whole thing all the way back do I?

The intake manifold gaskets maybe leaking on the driver side.

Wouldn't the intake manifold gaskets leaking throw a P0171 code as well?
