Well a few days ago my 01 X started actin weird. The idle was a little rough and it wouldnt start right away. Once again I was at a loss. My truck doesnt seem to want to tell me whats wrong with it. Yesterday the check engine light came on. I never thought I would be happy to see it come on but I was. Got the codes read and they were P0401 and P0442. So I went and purchased a new DPFE and proceeded to install it. Then I took a look at the canister purge valve and found that it was in good shape. No rust, no contamination no nothing. Once again I was at a loss. I cleared the codes and started the X up. It still was not starting on the first couple of cranks but I diidnt get any CEL. The idle was a little rough still so I took it out for a drive and just for *&^%$ and giggles I went and purchased a new gas cap. Started the X and iit started right up. No rough idle and runs great. I am thinking to myself, how can a gas cap cause so much trouble. Well I hope I have solved the problem we will see in the next comming weeks if thye CEL comes on. I wont be happy this time if it does.

Well the P0401 code reared its ugly head again today. Did some more testing and found out that a plastic nipple broke off the EGR vaccum soliniod causing a vaccum leak. Its a $25 part at the zone and I have to figure out how to get the broken piece out of the vaccum line. Any ideas on how to do this?

Sure, just thread a drywall screw (or equiv.) into the broken plastic nipple and pull it out with a pair of pliers.

Solved my Intermittem missing problem and code problem. My Idle is now smooth and no codes. I gave it a couple of months before I posted my results just to make sure nothing went wrong. As a matter of fact my gas mileage is about 17mpg now which iis more than what I used to get. The problem was simple it was a broken egr vaccum regulator. The nipple broke off and caused a vacuum leak. It must have been cracked for a while creating the intermitten misfire/ rough idle and then when it finaly broke it threw the codes.

I recently changed all my shocks on my 2003 XLT and had to remove the fuel return EVAP canisters to get to the rear shock towers. I thought I had replaced the parts exaclty. A few days later, my "Check fuel cap" light came on. Then, my "Check engine light". I removed the system and inspected it. Put everything back in, making sure the hoses were in tight to specs. Disconnected the battery for about 30 minutes to clear the issue.
Now, several weeks later, my check engine light is on. Checked the codes and got only a P0442. Not sure what to do next. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
And my gas cap is secure. Ive made sure of that, however it is nine years old.
