http://www.fordparts.com says this part does not exist. In Hawaii labor is expensive...decided to replace part myself, go straight to the parts counter, hand him the paper that lists the code, and tech description that I received from the from the dealer. He got me the part, said it was non-returnable, and promised me it was the right part. I started looking for a part on the truck that looked like the one I have, but I can't find one...there are several solenoids, but not one like the one he gave me... I took the rear passengers side wheel off, and the spare tire, to get to what I thought was it, but it had different part numbers. Please help!

The lady at the counter said they had to remove the tire....not sure which one.

Details:

2008 Ford Explorer 4.0 4x4(warranty just expired...go figure!)
Dealer: Cutter Ford Isuzu Aiea, Hawaii

Invoice states: "CUSTOMER DECLINED REPAIRS CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON. VERIFY CONCERN. PERFORMED SELF TEST. RETRIEVED CODE P0456 EVAP SYSTEM SMALL LEAK. PERFORMED SMOKE TEST. RECOMMEND REPLACE EVAP PURGE VALVE.

part given: 6F9Z-9F945-AA SOLENOID

i would clear the code, and see if it comes back.

456 is a small leak, it can be set also with no leak, bad seal on the gas cap etc.

the valve is around the spare tire off hand.

under the truck where the fuel filler necks connects tot he truck look up. should be the purge valve.

Reset...

I disconnected the battery for about 3 hours, and the code was gone...Then it came back, and I can actually smell the gas a little while driving now. Gas cap is good, did a chalk test on it. The solenoid they gave me doesn't have a curved neck like the one that is installed by the spare tire. The one I received from Ford also has a different part number, and one of those special Hose connectors. The one on the truck does not have that special connector. Should I go ahead and put the new solenoid in, and get a new piece of hose that will slip over the special connector? Please help....
