For those who don't remember Dead Link Removed the first thread about my tranny problems...

Well, i finally got it out and another tranny put in. My atsg manual came in yesterday so I started pulling this one apart....It didn't take too long to find the problem (see attached image)

My question is this...Would you guys go ahead an tear it the rest of the way down, or just replace the separator plate and gaskets and put it back together? There's a bit of sludge in there, especially in the low/reverse servo, I got it all cleaned up at this point but I'm not sure...the unit has about 61k miles on it right now, so would it be worth it to continue tearing apart?

Good picture to show the failure mode

I'm asking myself the same question since I have a '99 w/52K that the gasket was repaired on also. I'd probably just put in the gasket. So did you tighten up the valve body bolts on the replacement after you installed it? If you really found a lot of sediment in the pan then the forward clutch and reverse band might have some wear on them. You will likely be stuck with this garage ornament a long time and not need it. Some day after a few beers the decision will be more obvious. It will be calling you to open it up. I got 130K on mine and doubt I will ever use my spare. I have been thinking about sealing some gaskets in plastic and storing them behind some panel in the Explorer. Just in case I have this problem when I'm 1,000 miles from home.

I learned the lesson about the bolts the hard way ;) I double checked everything when putting the replacement in the truck. Since I'm in no hurry with it I think I'll go ahead and tear it down. It'll be a learning experiance if nothing else :) I've got the time and the tools (except for the 'specialty tools')...

For all of you messing with this stuff get the ATSG manual...do it now. Had I have had access to this thing from the beginning I probably would have found this and been able to fix it in the truck and saved myself quite a bit of money and time...don't be hardheaded (like I was) ...the book is only $16 ;)

I doubt you'll find anything wrong

Seems like Fords just tend to be a little dirty. If clutches wear out it tends to be because of a seal problem not from use. You do look at things differently after the first time. Nex time you will pull the valve body first. And there will be a next time! On another board, a poter has had the gasket replaced three times by the Ford dealer. I wonder if they will come out with the double tickness gasket option like they do for the A4LD or an add on brace that spans the two bolts in this section. You've paid for it so have fun taking it apart. If people just bought the manual when they bought the car and read it for fifteen minutes each week, they wouldn't believe that rebuild story when they had a problem. So are you going to grind down some 5 & 6 mm bolts and make guide pins?

The trans didnt have that many miles on it I would be tempted to disassemble the VB and put it in a parts washer then put it back together with the new gaskets.

If you want to tear it down Check E-bay for the tools everyonce and a while the specialty sets show up.

Good Luck

Once I get back to it I'm going to have a look at the pin locations, I'm definatly going to do something along those lines, but metric fasteners are scarce around here for some reason...I might make something out of some brass rods that I have laying around..
