I replaced the emergency brake shoes on my 99 Mountaineer, and when I finished I noticed that the cable had slipped off the prong that sticks out the back of the mounting plate.

For the life of me, I can't figure out how to get this back on. Anyone know how to do this?

Those things are a bear to get on. I had a broken left side brake cable last year. Just to get the short replacement cable attached to the part that goes over to the right wheel and back to the pedal was near impossible. I had to attach a rope to it, pull with all my might and have my wife help me (something I hate to do and try to avoid at all costs). I saw no way to adjust any slack into the main cable. I've since read a thread that talks about an adjustment screw somewhere near the parking brake pedal mech. but I finally got the cable attached by disconnecting both cable ends at the wheels. Then I fully slacked of the parking brake shoe adjusters and used vise-grips and a screw driver to hook the ends back on. Then I re-adjusted the parking brake shoes. There must be an easier way, but this method worked for me (bearly).

There is a clip, where the cable sleeve mounts to the backing plate. It is hard to see, hard to remove, and hard to get back on. Use the drill bit method at the pedal, pull the clip, re-connect the cable end, then put the clip back in, and remove the drill bit.
