Need some knowledge on programming Pat's key without an original

Are you saying you don't have any keys or that you only have one working key? If no working key - Locksmith or Ford dealership are about your only choices. If you have one working key, you can have a clone made at Ace or Walmart, but that will not allow you to make any additional keys yourself. With 2 working (none cloned) keys you can program your own. The procedure is in the owner's manual,

If you have no keys, you may be able to get a replacement PCM with matching keys from the salvage yard. If you do, make sure it's from the same year/model as your old PCM.

if you have to replace the PCM... you can have two unprogrammed keys and follow this procedure. Its more expensive and most Explorers have a type E PCM

I had no original key (single) with my 98 and I had to go to Ford to get new ones made.

They made me 2 new keys and made my clone key work as well for something like $80.
