Year, Model & Trim Level
2003 limited
Girlfriend's 03 limited 4.6 started loping and died. Codes are pointing to PCM failure. Ford wants $600. To find one used how specific do I have to be? Does it have to be out of another limited? Or can it be any model? Can it be out of a 4.0 and just reflashed for the 4.6? Etc. You see what I'm getting at. Thanks guys!

Limited only refers to the trim, not the drivetrain.

You should match the drivetrain, including engine, transmission, type AWD-4WD, and differential gearing, or you'll have troubles getting it to work well if at all.

What codes?

Kyle, back in the 90s I bought many PCMs from AutoZone and Checker Auto, rebuilds, then about $75. Don't know if new gens are available for sure, but I expect they should be. imp

codes were:

-p0307
-p0316
-p0352d
-p0405
-p0420
-p0430
p0455

Thank you

That would be awesome. I just assumed they wouldnt be able to get something like that. I'll check it out, thanks!

well I tried the local auto stores and nobody can get it.... any other suggestions?

99% any pcm you buy most likely ford will not be able to program it. less its the replacement for the vehicle,

in the end i have a fear you will pay for 2 pcm's one from a dealer one from where every you buy it.

pcm's from ford come blank, they need to be programed, for some reason they all look the same but wont work or program up to the vehicle.....

2nd problem will be pats, and other things that change slightly from mid year to mid year.

that is one of 2 codes that pointed me towards a bad coil IIRC

ok ill look into that some more. Its my scanner but im out of state and had somebody else do it for me so I may have misunderstood. Thanks

Something else to consider. She said the CEL was flashing at her if that helps any. Also, I have been having troubles with her tranny. At normal/easy driving around town its perfect, but as soon as you lean into it to drop into a passing gear it just winds out and WILL NOT shift until you completely let out of the throttle. The gear/speed does not make any difference- it does it no matter what. Which def. makes me think electrical, not tranny related. Could this also be PCM related? Thanks all for the quick responses

I have the correct part number so will definitly stick with that one. Thank you. What do you mean by pats?

trans will never shift fine with engine problems.

you have cat codes, miss fires, egr codes and others.

does the car run/start etc?

the codes you have are both banks cat codes, miss fire codes, most likely a dpfe or esm on the truck and an evap leak off the top of my head reading them.

Signatures??

HTH did my question to a remote viewer regarding signatures wind up here??

Interesting point, which I personally know little about. However, back when I was doing EFI coversions (carb. to FI), the PCMs I bought as rebuilds from local parts stores in Phoenix worked just fine right out of the box........

Perhaps times have changed??? imp
