PCV valve, Sea-Foam and Tune-Up for 1999 Explorer 302 AWD V8 302 8 cylinder

For those that still might have a hard time picturing where the pcv valve is located, here is a picture of the lower intake off of the engine:

Just found this post looking for information on Spark Plugs, but wanted to give those with the Older 5.0 Explorers a link to a full write up on how to find the PCV...

http://www.steven-west.com/explorer/explorer_pcv.htm

This was from a '97 Explorer. Looks like the '99 Setup is a little different, hope this helps those of you who are still confused.

'97 5.0L PCV replacement and Seafoam treatment

Well, I finally changed my PCV valve in my '97 5.0, and thought I'd post some things I learned, in case anyone is as slow as I am. ;) Note that I have an early '97 model, with the internal EGR. That might matter in how easy or hard it is to see things the same, not sure.

I finally broke down and purchased the "kit" which replaces all of the PCV hoses as well. The part number of that is XL2Z-6C324-AA. The biggest problem with replacing all of the hoses is that you have to get them out! Because I wanted to mess with it as little as possible, I pulled the PCV out by grabbing the hose at back of the intake and just pulled it up so I would have a seafoam insertion point before removing all of the hoses. I was able to do this, and add an extension hose, without removing the front and rear PCV hoses (yet).

Seafoam treatment went fine, let it sit for about 30 minutes as I fought with the rear PCV hose. Finally got it out. Here is a photo showing the location of the rear inlet. Not a great photo, but not very easy to find that rear inlet. It's right in the middle, just below the intake, behind that line that runs across the side (not sure what that is).

Here is the Seafoam insertion point:

Here is a side-by-side of the new and old PCV with hoses attached. You can see they changed it a bit (new one on the right), and it actually made it a little easier, after I stuck the end of my plyers in the end of each hose to stretch them out a bit.

Here is a photo of about where the PCV kit goes, "superimposed" on top of the intake manifold. ;)

Here is one last shot, ready for Seafoam. You can see the clear line I added to the end of the PCV hose for the seafoam. I just tucked the PCV hose behind the wiring harness at the firewall so that it would stay put.

Truck smoked for about 20-30 minutes, including a good bit coming from the engine bay :( , and some from around the 2nd set of cats. I know that one 'cause there is a gasket missing, but not sure how worried I should be about what was coming out of the engine bay. Guess I shoulda looked closer to get a better idea exactly where it was coming from.

Hope the extra photos help some people who are still having trouble finding this thing on the 5.0. Oh, almost forgot. After I was done, and cleaning up, I was putting about the first TWO PCVs I had picked up, which had right angle nipples on the top. Looking closer, and giving it a little tug, I found out that it comes off, exposing the straight PCV that I've been looking for. Of course, that aggravated me, and made me kick myself, but at least I've got them for the next time. And to clarify, the part number from Ford is EV-140 and you just pull off the right angle adapter.

Is it necessary

to change the spark plugs after doing the Sea-foam application and replacing the PCV?

1997 5.0

I found my PCV valve. It was on the back of my manifold passenger side. I am still unclear of how to properly do the seafoam application. Do I put the seafoam in the hole that my PCV came out of? If so, once I get the seafoam in there do I put the valve back in place before I start it back up and bring out the neighbors? HELP:)

If in doubt, do it the easy way - use the bower brake booster vacuum hose.

NO! That would be dumping it into the oil basically. Pull the PCV valve out, and pull the PCV valve out of the hose. Then put the seafoam in the hose end. That feeds the intake. Easiest to attach a length of hose so it is easier to work with.

using the bower brake line (in als words) is B.S.
use the EGR line, or any line that will deliver the seafoam, along with the intake airflow, just past the TB, front to back, that way all cylinders, get the same dose,
The easy way, as Al dictates, is the wrong way, JMO

So mine 5.0 is set up just like the on in the link provided by Cali' Explorer. In the 5th photo you can see the PCV tube..is this where I need to put the seafaom in? If it is, after the seafaom is in and the car stalls do I need to place the old PCV valve back into the tube, plug it back into the intake and then start it after 30 mins? After the smoke clears I am then clear to put the new PCV valve in, right?

Yes, that's the same location as in my photos. Pull that hose up for better access, and insert Seafoam there. I would think that you can put the new PCV in as soon as the Seafoam is in there and you'll be fine. I'm not sure what good it would do to wait for it to finish smoking.

Does anyone know do the same procedure apply to the 4,0 SOHC ?? where is the PCV in this motor ??

Funny thing about the ******** at Autozone

and PepBoys and Checker....I get the # for the Fram PCV valve for my 02 Sport....and it looks nothing like the one I took out......I just put it back in the box and in my tool chest since I lost the receipt.......I was working on my aunts Saturn(these things smoke way more than my Sport when seafoamed) and I checked the PCV valve(caked in oil) and it's the same Fram valve and #.........I just wonder why any of these parts stores won't stop hiring Oxygen wasting Bipeds and get a person or two with some sense.......I've had good results seafoaming my Sport Via the Brake booster vacuum. I'm still in search of Gaskets for my Intake Manifold(got to be the last thing that is causing my idle/surge/irritating issue...... Ford service tech(brand new) said I could just use some create a gasket material........now...am I correct in thinking that's about the last place you would want to try that........I may have to drive a few hours to get my gaskets......or I'm going to blow my own personal one.

Contact Torrie at Fast Parts Network ( a site sponsor ) and have them shipped to your door.

Thanks

sending money the way of a sponsor is much much better an idea for me than sending it anywhere here(esp the giant Ford Dealership we have here) The parts counter.....didn't have plugs......wires......a pcv valve.....told me i didn't need an EGR valve gasket.....but they sure tried their damndest to get me to shell out 500.00 just to buy a new fuel line set up(who knows what their labor costs) when that little evil 8 inches of braided nylon clamped to the solid line and going to the fuel filter busted.......they said I could die...violate some sort of environmental laws.....it was hilarious.....it took a few days to get that metal clamp crap off but new quick connects and filter...and fuel injection hose with clamps......and I have no issues there.....my girlfriend tried to help me by firing up my dremel and trying to give it to me when I was down there.....I wonder if she secretly works for Ford or Autozone....hrmmm

im new here and from the looks of things......looking for the pcv vale is like finding the g-spot......hope its as much fun!

I'm still trying to figure out which hose to squirt the Sea Foam into... before I start asking a lot of below-80-IQ type questions I'll wait and look under the hood after work to see if I can figure it out.

Okay.... I did a little recon under the hood, and checked out the link that Cali Explorer posted, and I think I've got it figured out:

1. Pull the hose off the PCV valve (leaving the other 2 ends connected)

2. Leave the PCV valve INSTALLED.

3. Bend the loose end of the hose upwards, and tuck it behind the wire loom to hold it in place.

4. Insert siphon hose for clean, easy application of SeaFoam.

5. Start engine and slowly add 1/2 bottle of SeaFoam, allowing engine to stall in the end.

6. Reinstall PCV hose. Pour remaining 1/2 bottle of SeaFoam into crankcase via oil filler tube

7. Start engine and go on a "spirited" drive around the neighborhood... being sure to put the engine under load and get the RPM's "up there" ;) Not to mention crop dusting your neighbors with white fog.

...I'm headed over to the dealership today to pick up a replacement PCV valve. I may pick up a can of this stuff and give it a try.

Thanks for the tips, folks!
