OK, I have been reading god only know how websites regarding Performance chips and programmers. Diablo, Hypertech, SCT, Apten, etc. are all swimmming around in my head. So Im asking the experts ... What in the heck do I buy?? Ive got a 01 Sport with the normal V6 SOHC and here is what Im looking for. Chip or Programmer under 300.00 (closer to 200-250 would be better) that is going to give me four things

1. Remove the speed limiter, cause it annoys the hell out of me :fire:
2. Still be able to use 87 octane, I dont know if you have an oil well in your backyard but I dont and here gas is outrageous, so chips that are 91 and above arent going to cut it for the time being.
3. Able to easily revert back to stock.
4. And the all important HP/TRQ increases.

Added bonus would be something I could buy via Advance Auto seeing I get a 20% discount there. (ie. Hypertech) I like the Hypertech method of plugging in, answering a few questions and having the device mod as needed, but a chip would be fine too.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I think your best bet would be an SCT XCalibrator 2. .

You can reprogram your computer in a matter of minutes with any tune you want.

You will get very little performance with an 87 tune; whereas a 89 can yield good things.

Contact Doug Studdard at Bama Chips ( http://www.bamachips.com/ ) for more info and to purchase your programmer.

Good luck .....

Also I was looking at this...

http://www.motorhaven.com/home.php?cat=365

Anyone have an opinion on that? Since it came with 4 customs tunes as well as the stock settings I was thinking the following ...

1. Stock
2. 87 Performance
3. 87 Towing
4. 89 Performance
5. 91 Performance

Plus it is only 269.00 which isnt bad in my book.

Lots of people here have chips & tuners programed by Doug over at Bama chips.

I am one of them. I have only dealt with him and Apten (which no longer exists).

Doug works very closely with you to guarntee you get the exact program you want and what works best with your needs and desires. He comes HIGHLY reccomended by more than just me.

moved to computer section - it can still be discussed there

Im sure that Doug does excellent work but for my near stock X I dont just dont see paying the 30-50% higher costs over other SCT suppliers. For what Doug charges 300.00 w/ 1 tune, I can get for 228.00 from one of SCT's biggest suppliers. His 325.00 multi tune chip comes with only 2 tunes, where I can get the whole multi-bank chip filled with 5 tunes for 269.00. Depending on what I decide that is 55-70 dollars savings.

Granted for a highly modified car I would only trust someone with alot of experience to mess with the computer, but for me who only wants rid of the speed limiter and a little extra oomph I just dont see it.

Chances are that you will be disappointed with the generic off the rack tunes. I have tested them.

You know I was thinking about this, with gas prices what they are now, I wonder if anyone could program me a stock chip with nothing but the speed limiter removed/raised? Given the cost of chips, and only a single setting to be made, wonder if I could find someone to do this fairly cheap. 230.00 for a single setting is a little steep for my logic. Im not really into having a street racer, but not having that lag as I approach 85-90 mph would be nice in the few instances where I could have used it.

I am confused. If you are worried about the price of gas, why are you concerned with a speed limiter?

It is just one of my pet peeves. I pay for a truck that says it can do 120, I expect it to be able to so, to do otherwise is fraud in my eyes. I am weird like that, so you'll have to overlook me. I guess it comes down to an old saying, being able to do something and not gives power and respect, to do something for the sheer reason of being able to cheapens it and makes it worthless. I like to KNOW I can do 120 if I so choose to.

Not to mention every other vehicles (including the old Ex) I have owned thus far was lucky to get to 70 much less 120. lol

Your Ex will do at least 120, live with the fact that you have been prevented to do so for good reasons.
If you really have a need to exceed the limiter, get a flasher, and be done with it.

If you are after MPG's here are two things. 1 No one on Gods green earth knows more about MPG's that Aldive.
2 Doug maks a hell of an MPG program. I went from about 240 miles to a tank to 280 miles to a tank ( 17.5 gal tank ) with dougs program, and I drive like a fool.

I monmix, believe it or not have actually refered no less than 3 people to Bama in the past 3 weeks, he has not responded.what to do?

I dunno.

I stand by his product.
Maybe he is busy. Maybe some thing more important is going on in his world. Maybe he is trapped in his basement and cant get out. I dunno what to tell you.

Doug is/was, a very talented programmer, as is/was Wayne Foy, as was Brian herron.
Ever wonder why they have all sort of faded away?
Is no profit margin worth the effort to sell SCT products.
The market is not there, what was has been saturated and oversold.
Mark my word, within a year, you will see a puter company come out with a device that will do the same as SCT, for 10 times less cost.
remember when cell phones cost 500 bux?
My first home puter, 12 yrs ago was 5 grand, take a lesson.

Neither Doug or Wayne have fallin away....They are doing very good...That is why Doug has not responded. He needs to take care of the customers he is working on now and then go on to the next one. I mean it is kind of like a first come first serve thing with Doug. He runs it all. Only one man can do soo much. I will put Doug's buisness out to anyone seeking the product, just like Aldive did to me.

How long do you think it actuallys takes to program a flasher, pack and ship it?

Once again, it is a first come, first serve basis. Do you have any idea at how many customers he has. I can assure you it is more than a hand full.

Plus I am quite sure he has a life out side of programing chips
