Perimeter Alarm add-on to stock fobs?

All,

I just got a 98 Explorer Limited - man there's a lot of bells and whistles on this thing.

Anyway, my fiancee really likes the stock key FOBs - you know: one click to unlock just the driver's door, and two clicks to unlock all the doors.

I really like the "chip in the key" thing. My BMW has these, and BMW theft's have been greatly reduced since their introduction.

But we are used to having full alarm systems; ones that honk when someone opens the door without "deactivating" the alarm first with the FOB.

I notice that the owner's manual speaks of a "Perimeter Alarm System." What is that, and can it be added either by the dealer or a shadetree mechanic? Can other alarm do-dads be added to the stock anti-theft devices?

Or should I just ignore all the factory stuff and simply add a Viper 550 or similar?

get a viper 550 or similar! a good aftermarket alarm protect your car much better than anything i know of to do to the stock alarm. also any good install guy will be able to set it up where one button or one push will only unlock the driver door, and some other button or combination of pushes will open the rest of the doors.

Even though the alarm system in our explorers isn't what you would call a full system, it will honk if the car isn't opened without using the key or remote. Try rolling down your driver's side window and lock your ex. Open it from the inside and your alarm should go off

I just tried this and nothing happened.

David, did you wait 30 seconds so the system can arm itself? If it doesn't work, that means your alarm system didn't have a chance to arm itself.

Ok, it works. I rolled the window down then locked it and waited 30 seconds. Then I opened the door using the inside handle and it went off. But what does this mean, what if I had reached inside and unlocked the door then opened it with the outside handle? I would have tried it, but its a wee be cold outside right now. What are all the circumstances in which the alarm will go off?

It should do the same thing. The alarm will go off for 2 minutes and 45 seconds or until you disarmed the system.

Having determined that the horn will honk if the door is opened without the door code, remote FOB, or key, I am feeling a bit better.

On my 98, I know that the starter is disengaged without the correct chip in the key. This prevents hot wiring the car. Great.

I get remote door unlocking with the FOBs. Great! Almost there.

The last minimum requirement for the built-in alarm is a flashing LED or similar inside. I know there's a little red flashing "Theft" light on the dash, but I don't think it is noticable enough. As a stopgap measure, I have a little flashing LED attached to a 9 volt battery with a switch (all one little self-contained unit - pretty nice, really) that I just stick in the little cubby next to the cupholder and turn on in "iffy" areas.

Anyone have any thought about adding a blinking LED somewhere in the cabin that would automatically blink when the built-in alarm system armed? Any way to tap into the flashing "Theft" light in the dashboard?

Check out http://www.varad.com. They have some really nice L.E.D scanners that are able to be wired to a switch or directly to an existing alarm. They can also be wired to come on automaticly when the vehicle is shut off, with or with out an existing alarm.

Hey, I think you should consider integrating a shock sensor into the factory alarm as well I'm planning to do it once I get new rims...If someone TRIES to steal them, the alarm will go off. Then I'll come and kick their a$$

yeah i like it that you can still work the windows. Its that way in my dad's 98 Taurus as well.

Yeah, it's the accessory delay. The windows (including the sunroof) will work for 10 minutes or until one of your front doors is opened. It's a great feature if you drive with your windows down a lot, like me.

*Here's an idea.....go to Red Lobster at the busiest time on a Saturday night.....they will hand you one of those pagers that light up and blink. Don't go back! BAMMMM! you got yourself a free scare-off blinking thing-a-majig....just duck tape it to your dash.
