I have a friend who used to do stock photography for some of the auto parts suppliers- he'd take pictures of the shiny new part for them to use in their advertising, etc. Well, he had to find a new industry many years ago as everything went computer-rendered. The way it works now, they either create an image from the design files or they take one stock photo/video (Explorer driving past a green screen, however they do it) and then superimpose that on whatever background. This allows the marketing folks to shoot background images anywhere, or purchase stock images, and then make it a Ford ad. The new computer software can do amazing things for the "reality"- add shadows (the tree limb shadows across the windhiels), transparency of the windshield through the back window, etc. But as good as it is, there are still subtle clues that it is generated rather than real.
