I decided to get rid of the factory sub and build a custom home for my sub woofer amp.

The green circles are where the factory sub's enclosure was bolted down. I decided since the holes were already there with bolts that I would use them to mount the amps enclosure. I did have to move the bottom bracket back a few inches to align with the other two points.

Here is the finished piece minus the amp and neon. On the first pic you can see two dark grey spots on the bottom-right and upper-left, those are two of the three bolts that hold everything in place.

Here it is with the amp and neon mounted and wired up

Here it is completely finished. The neon looks pretty sweet coming from behind the grill. Plus when everything is off it is totaly stealth, you couldn't tell that it had been modified at all.

So what do you think?

That looks great!! I really like that setup!! I like how the amp is well hidden, though still accessible for tweaking, when needed. The neon behind the grill looks sweet. Nice job!!

That looks great! I've been contemplating different ideas of what to do with my amp, I will either do that, or do a plexiglass on the floor mount job. Again, looks nice!

looks great. some people put a plexi cover, but yours is cool because it's hidden when turned off.

WOW! Looks great.

Looks great.
Now, for your next challenge.....
Figure out how both my amps can mount to the bottoms of the seats in an explorer sport!
That's a true challenge.

Where did you get a grill like that from what year is you X. looks really good just gave me a great place to put mine lovin it!!

Snowbd2u:
My X is a '99. That grill is the original grill that covered the factory sub woofer.

Karl_burns:
I would love to help but I'm unfamiliar with the rear seat of a sport. Sorry

I know this is a little late, but what is the max amp size you could fit in there? I would like to do something like this, just trying to figure out if my amp will fit. It is 12 13/16 L x 8 3 /4 W x 2 H. I also have a cap, do you think it would fit in there? If not I could mount it back there somewhere. Also, I wouldn't be uing any neon so that way I could use any and all space back there. Thanks

I am doing the same thing to my X. I started working on it today. I am trying to figure out how to mount my amp in there... can you give any suggestions?

Rock883:
I just went and measured, and you should be alright, my only concern is that you won't be able to easily tweak your amp. My amp is smaller so I can fit my hand in there and tweak it with no problem. Just something you might want to watch out for. Also if you extend yours, so that it goes over the wheel well more you could mount your cap hidden behind the panel without a problem

I got your email; I was just really busy moving this weekend. First off how big is the amp you want to mount there? Second, did you have the factory subwoofer back there originally?

Nice install. I just did a totally stealth install of my amps yesterday. Both of my amps fit in that ver same compartment. No problem and no lure for the theives. I can also remove my box when I like if I need the space now (I got that idea from leenjen! thanks!) in case I need to haul some stuff.

Sweet, can you still tweak your amps or do you have to remove the panel first? How did you secure your box to the floor?

bigtigexplorer: yea i had the original sub. I have since removed it all ( 2 factory amps and sub). I mounted some wood and it looks great. i did not recess it like you did though. (or so it looks) My amp is close to the panel, but it should work. One question though: how can you remove the sub opening in the panel (not just the grill) with the panel on there? I see the plastic clips but dont know how to get them off with the panel on.
BTW thanks for the idea. just need to get a mini neon now.

I can still tweak the amps if I remove the factory sub woofer grill that I left in place. The box isnt secured to the floor as of yet. Any ideas?

i got nothing to say but that it looks very nice bigtig!

Sideswipe - This is what I did. One on each side, to remove it just unlock the pad locks and pull it out.
