I have a 1994 Eddie bauer, problem is within the last month it has started to ping real bad when going up long grades. only thing that helps is when I add octane booster to gas. Using ethonal which is 89 octane does not seem to help. any ideas? thanks

1) Search for engine ping. This is a very common problem on the early 4.0 OHV and has been discussed many times.

2) Common causes: a) carbon buildup in the cylinders (search for decarbon or seafoam). b) engine running slightly lean. most commonly caused by either a dirty MAF (search for cleaning MAF), or loose lower intake manifold bolts.

Got he same problem with my ´90. Octanebooster won´t help solving the cause for this prob.

At mine the O2-Sensor was faulty. Check your EEC / OBD for errorcodes, guess youll find some like "lean fuel mixup" or "mixup lean for more than 15 sec´s". ( Code 41 / 42 ). "65" means O2-Sensor is shortcut, "144" says O2-Sensor doesn´t work.

I recommend using a good engine flush for the crankcase and something to clean your MAF and Throttle body. I had a pretty annoying ping myself and when I used amsoil oil and their engine flush the first time I have yet to have it anymore. But I also cleaned my TB and MAF real good as well.

I had the same prob. I cleaned the MAF and used Seafoam Deep Creep in the intake. No more pinging!
