I am guessing that more information than this will be required. In particular, which engine and drive train (2WD, 4WD, AWD, etc) do you have? Possibly this can be answered without that information but it is better to at least have it listed in your profile.
At any rate, I am not sure what you mean by "all the way down".
Two bearings separated by a spacer which controls bearing preload, held together by a big nut. This would be for 99% of the differential section pinions. Ford 9-inch pinion uses THREE bearings:
